We have to stay ahead of the arms race. Our playing from the back countered the prevailing and stagnant MLS strategy of both teams playing direct leading to track meets in MLS, where the ball pinged from keeper to keeper with a few touches in between. Credit to the few teams who caught on and were able to execute that strategy.

Its up to Patrick to find the counter to the press. I trust that he will, and MLS will have been elevated along the way. You are welcome, rest of the league.
I don't disagree. But this all stems from how we cannot do that if we are carrying the two "mf" DPs we have now. I just don't think it's possible to devise a system that keeps them both on the field and allows us to counter the press - unless we get Coutinho to dribble out or Arturo Vidal to be a one man wrecking crew alongside them.

I agree. The offer to extend Frank is insanity and I hope its only made with the prescience that he won't accept.

What if the choice is Lampard or no one? Lampard scored 12 goals this year. I know you credit Pirlo with the squad being the highest scoring squad in the league, but Lampard's goals had nothing to do with Pirlo.

I would argue that our tactics are entirely wrong and we are built for the counter attack. Hunker down and hit them long like Leicester City did last year. With Villa, Harrison and Shelton, we have the pace to still do that. Pirlo is good for a 50 yard ball to spring that, but he is a liability defensively.

Where do you want to play Lampard? In midfield again?

it's definitely not no one. It may be a lesser name or mid-year or something like that, but it's not no one. Even a loanee on high wages would be fine.

Offering Frank another year makes me think that the biz side guys think most of the fans are just PL carryovers. I don't think that's the case - certainly not here, but we represent a more die-hard group than even the typical STH.

There will always be someone, yes. But you need to replace 12 goals. Easier said than done. If they don't have a good feeling that they can get a guy in the winter to replace Lampard OR if there is a guy they want in the summer that won't score goals, I can understand why they would consider bringing him back.

I personally think it's time to move on, but the guy was the 11th highest goal scoring player in MLS this season. That's nuts.

Not really. The team does not necessarily need to replace the 12 goals, because let's face it, scoring that many in MLS is the outlier more than the norm.

The team can easily afford to lose those twelve goals if they give up min of 12 fewer goals, and we ALL know that will be possible with anybody else besides Saunders.... that is, as long as we don't have to play a pressing team every week (and the majority of the league doesn't press).

Hell, reduce the number of pure gaffes in the last 2 minutes of games and we've already increased our goal differential.

I'd be ok if we go two mf dps again but they have to be fast and skilled on the ball. We had so much difficulty playing out of the back consistently and even more so against the press. We need players that can play through it.
Take city for example. They often play through the middle, suck the fullbacks in and cut a pass to navas/sterling on the wing and suddenly they're in the attacking third within two passed and 5 seconds.
This team really needs creativity. We're very hard to watch in the final third. And our passing charts are something to barf at. We work so hard to get the ball up the field but when we finally do it takes so long that our opponents have ample time to get setup. Lots to work on in the next few months. I'm very open to Academy loans too

You both seem to be assuming its a DP offer. We don't know that's what it is.

Excuse me Boss Didn't you get the News on page 3 of this thread it was post to you??

It would be DP money, yes.

But they REALLY don't expect him back. Put it this way, today, Saturday, November 12th, I would say this:

Chances Lampard returns: 20%
Chances we have a 3rd DP in March: 20%
Chances we have a 3rd DP in July: 50%
No 3rd DP: 10%

Why does that 10% exist?

Would it be an inability to find players? Or because CFG spent quite a bit on the opening salvos of the team?
