Set pieces: what even are they?

How is it possible that a professional team in the top league in the nation can't seem to ever* score from set pieces other than penalties? No team in the league fears conceding corners to us, and free kicks are hardly much more productive.

Do we think there's just a total lack of emphasis on set pieces by PV? Seems unlikely given how elaborate some of our corner routines are.

Is this just a weird statistical anomaly, and eventually we'll regress to the mean and start converting a normal amount of set pieces?

*I know we have scored a few goals from set pieces, but I think our relatively poor set piece productivity is a common enough observation.
How successful is the average team at corner kicks? This article says 3.5% So are we really that bad, or corners in general just aren't very successful

Yeah, this is the thinking behind the short corner; retain controlled possession rather than flip a coin.

But in terms of relative set piece productivity, the average number of goals scored from set pieces by an MLS team this season is 3.3, the median is 4 and the mode is 5. We have scored 2. So we're underperforming for sure. Houston is overperforming with 8, and six teams are overperforming with 5. That said, exactly 50% of teams this season have scored 3 or fewer from set pieces.

In 2016 the average was 10, the median was 10 and the mode was 11. We scored 9. A slight underperformance. NJRB led the league with 20.

So the two set pieces this year are at DCU (Maxi to Villa) and at DAL (TMac rebound of Villa shot off crossbar), right?

I'd put set pieces and corners into two separate categories. This team is dead awful at corners. NYCFC has taken 78 corner kicks and scored on one of them...a 1.3% response rate. They are in the top 6-7 clubs in corners taken. In comparison, the Dynamo have taken 79 corners. Make of that what you will.

I know they don't have big hulking CF's or CB's but come on.

Can we please hire Brian McBride to coach set pieces, or at least how to head the ball? That guy, bless his heart and continuously elbowed face, could successfully head nearly every cross that came his way. It was like a magnet was embedded under his forehead that attracted synthetic ball material.

Wasn't Villa's goal vs. Orlando (home) a set piece?

I think that was the goal that canchon canchon was thinking of as our goal at DCU was TMac and was not a set piece.

SoupInNYC SoupInNYC is right, I went back and reviewed it now. The set piece goal was vs Orlando, free kick by Maxi who sent it long down the side to Villa who one-touched it in. None of the goals against DCU.

So wait, that makes it 2 goals off of set pieces and 0 off corners - 0 for 78 off corner kicks the year? Is that really right? Not a single goal off a corner all year?

That's my count. Two from free kicks and none off corners.

Both that Orlando game as well as the one at DCU were games we were chasing a 2-0 deficit.

We're also 4th in the league on goals scored after a rough part of the schedule.

If we are trading off goals scored in open play vs. from set pieces – and there is good reason to think we are, with regard to optimizing for smaller, more technical players – then I am happy with that trade-off. Aesthetically as well as on the stats sheets.

Regression to the mean is a beautiful thing...in one game we went to the MLS median.

I have to admit I was shocked when the first one went in. Maybe they do read the forums.

In this case, I suppose it is progression to the mean.

Either way, it's good to see (and a reminder about how random soccer can actually be).

It's also a trend toward the mean for corner kicks. We were what? 0-78 going in? Now we would be 2-84. The average scoring rate is around 3%, so not far off.

Yup, 0-78 going into the game (and I think they were up to 0-82 before scoring on the last two corners). They are at 2.3% now, so we should expect another goal sometime soon!

(Or let's hope that it's not followed by another 0-78. Yikes.)

It's going to be hard for any team to mark us once Hererra gets back. Having one extra tall/physical body can put stress on the assignments.

Chanot, Callens, Sweat, Hererra, White are all 6'0" or taller and Wallace plays bigger than his 5'11". That's a formidable group provided Maxi/Harrison can get the crosses in.
