Etihad is promoting Abu Dhabi as a stopover destination, the way a lot of people visit Iceland. Of course it's not as convenient as Iceland on a North America-Europe trip, but I think they're still pushing it.

Sweat is the outlier but the other 3 I'd categorize as our young players with options as to where they play. Mata, Harrison and SJ could all push for a move to Europe at any point if they choose. Seems like the team is using this just like in the past they have used training in Manchester as a within the rules way to help add to the perks of playing for NYCFC. Smart way to leverage CFGs assets in a way the differentiates NYCFC from other clubs in the MLS.

Well if David Villa is going to Abu Dhabi, I think a lot more people would be inclined to visit.
And I'm sure the players' personalities also play into this a bit. For example, I love Alex Ring, but he doesn't seem like the kind of personality that you would want to use in such a promotional video.
How many of these guys have kids? Might be the ones who are more inclined to go away for a week in the off season.
Makes sense for Sweat too, never met the guy but the way he yells at his teammates on the field and points fingers after mistakes I always get the impression that he thinks he's more elite than he is and he would have likely been pissed if he was not included in this trip.
Valid point, Ring's kids are super young and he seems like very much a family man from his social media. From Instagram it also looks like he and his family are maxing out their offseason time back him in Finland.
Not that they are short on cash but I'd bet there is a couple digit difference in David Villa's appearance fee when compared to Ben Sweat.
