2019 Offseason Thread

Also want to clarify we haven't declined SAS. If he isn't selected in the Expansion Draft, then he is still under contract with us.
If he hasn’t accepted the “bona fide offer,” though, should we really expect him back? I’d taken that to mean he’s on his way out, just hasn’t yet secured a new deal elsewhere.

. . . Saad Abdul-Salaam will be out of contract on December 31, 2018. The Club has extended a bona fide offer to Abdul-Salaam, which allows the club to retain his right of first refusal.

He is not under contract with us. Offering him contract, means that we retain his MLS rights. He could sign with another league on a free. If another MLS team wants to sign him, they would have to acquire his rights from us.

One reason I wish we would dial back the #DomeOut stuff, besides the fact that it's dumb, is that managers who are feeling pressure to get immediate results are less likely to play kids. Lewis only got looks when we were winning. Sands played well when we were forced to rely on him but didn't sniff the squad afterward. If we want guys like Scally to get their chances next season, we're going to have to be patient and think about whether maximizing our points in March and April is the thing we care about most.

Hmmmm

To be fair to NYCFC, if you look around other leagues, for example the bundesliga: The youngest player to debut was Nuri Sahin at 16 years, 11 months. Scally is still 15 years old.

By european league 1996 or later to match with mls,(if parenthesis, the youngest of all time):
Premier League: Matthew Briggs: 16 years, 2 months, 4 days
Serie A: Pietro Pellegri: 15 Years, 9 months, 5 days (Amedeo Amadei (1937) 15 years, 9 months, 5 days)
Ligue 1: Albert Rafetraniaina: 16 years, 27 days
Bundesliga: Nuri Sahin: 16 years, 11 months, 1 day
LaLiga: Fabrice Olinga: 16 years, 3 months, 6 days (Sanson (1930) 15 years, 8 months, 11 days)

MLS: Freddie Adu: 14 years, 10 months, 1 day. (Next closest is Davies at 15 years 8 months, 15 days, and after that is above 16 years.)

you can see between even the top leagues it's not common to play someone as young as Scally, so I completely understand why we haven't played him yet. As for Sands, he's now 18 so I'm hoping we see more of him, or his talent will just rot away... But I think he can become one of our top players if they give him the chance.

We all know Freddy was around 26 when he first debuted.

Myself, if the team does poorly next year, I'm already planning to take my amusement from watching Dome complain about the schedule and argue with reporters.

An absolute lie.

Damn, you caught me. Lewis got looks when we were winning. Then he got looks in a loss and a draw where he made some typical 21-year-old mistakes that contributed to two late opposition goals. Then people like you freaked out about not winning two games, and Lewis no longer got looks. Better?

Good call. Forgot about this. For some reason I thought he was still under contract.

No, he rescued points in multiple games. He came on when we weren’t winning. We ended up winning because of his play.

Posters skew facts all the time to fit their narratives, and that can be frustrating but whatever, except when a guy makes his entire schtick about stats and in turn ignores ones that aren’t open to interpretation - when a player comes on the field and what the score is at the time - there isn’t wiggle room with that. So yeah, you’re long-winded post was rendered false because you blew the facts, and you’re follow up was equally vapid.

I'm not sure why we protected Mata over Ibeagha. Mata has the same limitations he's had since he arrived. He lacks positional awareness, has 2-3 mental lapses a game on defense, is careless with the ball and is super injury prone. At 24 he's still young but he's also old enough to worry the mental parts of the game that he struggles with may never click in the way that they need to in order to complement his physical abilities. With all the injuries his once promising sell on market has to be all but dried up and over $400K a year is pretty pricey for a player with considerable flaws. Sweat has his limitations as well but he's domestic and costs half of what Mata does even with the raise he's reported to be getting.

Ibeagha on the other hand is a bargain, showed excellent growth across the year and did an amazing job filling in for Chanot for a solid chunk of games. Even if he's due some type of raise it seems crazy to risk losing him over Mata. Even if you want to keep both force Cincinnati to think about taking on $400K of Mata rather than Ibeagha on an insanely affordable deal.

Oh man if this forum is becoming that type of place I'm going to have go into hiding. My grammar/typing is atrocious. Thankfully everyone has been gracious enough not to call me out on it.

Kidding aside you're one of the most data driven posters here, don't get sucked into going the grammar route.

At this point I'm in the Lewis just needs to play camp, kids 21 years old with some areas in need of development but also just heaps of talent. If he's not going to play for us the team needs to send him somewhere that he can get consistent time and a chance to prove himself. I've been hard on him in the past but I will say this whole situation must suck for him yet I've never seen a single preseason/behind the scenes/inside training etc. video from the team where the kid hasn't been smiling from ear to ear. Someone needs to give him a shot if he doesn't fit our system fine, send him to someone that can use him.

Ha, you're safe. I don't care about anybody's grammar, I'm just winding Ulrich up because he hasn't made an effort to engage me in good faith discussion about literally anything in months. Which is a shame! I enjoy this site because just about everybody here is capable of disagreeing with one another in civil and interesting ways.

It is truly amazing that the two players in the team’s history that have been banished have always had the best attitudes when on camera or interviewed or doing PR. Mix and Lewis were always exemplary team members while facing extreme adversity regarding their playing situations.

I have the double whammy of not being nearly as grammatically proficient as I was in college and I typically use voice-to-text and Google/Samsung is not perfect either.
It really should be ignored. Language was developed to allow people to communicate effectively, minor errors do not inhibit anybody's ability to understand the message. When someone corrects an error, it proves that they understood your message and is wasting time.

Nah, I’ve engaged you plenty in good faith, and think you make pretty good observations when you don’t rely on pure meta data to cloud what the eye can see so clearly. But I’ll call out false and misleading statements when I see them, and if that includes the one on Lewis above or the tons of posts saying the club was about to hit its stride under Dome because of 35 shots off target, then I guess that’s in bad faith.
