2020 Roster Discussion

Does protecting Mata mean they are planning to go into next season without addressing our LB issues again? Considering he makes $420K that seems pretty steep for a backup. Unless they think they can sell him or his ability to play LW gives him enough utility to justify $420K on the bench all sings point towards another season of one mental mistake after another down the let side.

I don't think they see him as a backup. They protected who they think is their starting LB, and left unprotected the backup. We can argue the merits of that decision, but I don't think they see him as a backup.

Now, that's not to say they won't look to improve that position this window, just that at the moment, he's the starter.

At the end of the day, if our 4th best CB or last best player get taken it's not really anything to cry home about. We don't have a Latiff Blessing calibur player that could get scooped up. They can always make a deal for Barraza if he gets drafted. TBH, if I were an expansion team I would rather have the allocation dollars.

Considering we can only use 1 player, I think an expansion team would rather select a Sweat/Rocha/Seb that can contribute on day 1 rather than Barraza who is a more of a project.

considering how keepers age. Do you think barraza ever becomes a full time starter for us? I think we have SJ for a good while. Probably till the next CBA and TV deal and then a player like Barraza might not even make the 23 as a sub.

The real question is whether the club will want to pay Sean Johnson when he is up for his next contract.

non-international. USMNT level keeper who can play out of the back. They’ll find the TAM for him.
Yeah but that does not mean that it's a smart move. You can get an elite MLS keeper for less and use that allocation money elsewhere. Here are this year top keepers in terms of GA-xGA. Both Turner and Clark are US keepers.

GK GA-xGA Salary
1. Matt Turner | -8.29 | $75,938
2. Steve Clark | -7.90 | $140,000
3. Daniel Vega | -5.09 | $210,000

I don’t know rules, but let’s assume we got him for next year and he’s left unprotected. If someone takes him then befica can easily say “fuck that, were loaning him to nycfc not another team” cant they just recind loan? This is why I’m confused by it, unless rules state otherwise. That’s why I thought parks and ofori would be left unprotected
It doesn't quite work that way. The team that last had him still retain his rights. This happened just two offseasons ago with Yamil Asad and Atlanta ended up with a boatload of GAM/TAM for a player that they didn't have room for under the salary cap.

Yes, true. Im just throwing out scenrios where benfica liked his year and thought he is ready for a next step and loan him to europe (or benfica breaks mls loan because if he got drafted by expansion side and loans him to euro tram instead) team and jumpstart that euro career how valuable are those rights then if he don't come back until 5-6 years down the line. I just feel it was not worth the risk as expansion side for basically having discovery rights to him.

That was my thought process as to not having to protect him. Of course this can be moot if he had some sort of no trade clause that automatically puts him in protected list.

I don't think any of those are elite though. Good i guess but not elite. Especially Vega. He had his howlers but i still felt like dude was responsible for some goals against SJ.

Turner earned his spot after friedel left so i guess he had good season but still have to see what he does full season.

As for steve clark i dont know i didnt watch much of them That portland team was cold most of the year and just made it work in the end

They are not im the frei/hamid/johnson and maaaybe guzan level though not imo

Edit: i think johnson has three more good years in him

Not to mention, do we really see Luis Barraza as a starter for this team at any point? He's a prospect, sure, but Sean Johnson should be here for a long time. Sean's still only 30 years old, he's still got a long time of top-flight goalkeeping left.

I should have read all the other responses before writing mine hours later.

I dont think they go for someome that has never played an pro league game. You ain't getting much for him in tam/gam

I will say this: It also depends on how the teams are looking to create their rosters. I can see Nashville looking to build similar to the style of FC Cincinnati, while I think Miami will try to do it in the mold of an Atlanta or LAFC, looking to make a splash.

So Nashville, in that scenario, seems more likely to be looking for MLS talent now, where Miami might be looking to get pieces they can use as part of allocation/international roster spot moves.

Barraza doesnt fit the bill for either imo
