2020 Roster Discussion

I was thinking that. Didn't realize how good our depth was until I saw 3-4 names that would be a tough loss due to salary, ability, etc. Plus, losing that player would presumably make their new team better as well, in giving them a good backup or half decent starter.

(No particular order)
1. Ibeagha/Mata
2. Sweat
3. Ofori
4. Rocha
5. Caldwell
6. Barraza

I added Caldwell and Barraza due to us giving up some money or picks to get them in the draft, especially in Barraza's case. We dealt a lot to get him, and it would suck if we were to lose him for nothing.

It's going to be an interesting draft with two teams choosing. I hope they pull a Kreis and rate one of our lower-able players a lot higher and choose Stuver or Eric Miller.

The best part of the Scally transfer is that he is now proof to other kids that they can sign homegrown contracts without significantly hurting their chances of a Euro $$ move. Claudio should be ashamed of himself for not getting $1 for the club for Gio. He would have commanded a bigger fee than Scally and could have ended up in exactly the same place. Definitely a conflict of interest that seems to have hurt the team financially.

Ofori was a loan still. So he won't be available for expansion draft and we might not even have him for 2020 either. Same with Parks (yes i know you didn't include parks).

It's weird, but he actually is eligible, IIRC. They use the rosters as they are at the end of 2019, e.g., Ofori's still an NYCFC player for the purposes of the draft. They could select him just to lose him or try to renew the loan, but it is possible. Otherwise if we were bringing Ofori back, we'd just wait until after the draft to announce it.

Fantazma Same for Parks.

I'm not sure if you were being sarcastic, but I really think Rocha is a SOLID backup midfielder. He's completely out of his element as a defender, but as a midfielder, he does what he's supposed to do fairly well. He doesn't stand out or change the game, but he's fairly reliable when playing in the midfield.

i didnt take it as sarcasm. He’s a solid role player for his salary. We need players like that when the schedule gets overwhelming and the injury bug hits.

Expansion teams probably shy away from going after a loaner who is at the end of said loan. No point risking a free pick on someone who can just say no and go back to the team that loaned them out.

Gives us an additional "safe" spot or two with Parks/Ofori fitting that bill.

Parks was on loan, so I would think he's left unprotected unless we're extending the loan. And if Matarrita is out of contract, I can see him being left unprotected if we don't plan on bringing him back. That would allow two of Ibeagha, GMS, Sweat, and Ofori to get protected. My guess is they'd protect Ibeagha and Sweat in that case since GMS and Ofori have higher salaries that probably wouldn't be desirable.
 
No reason to protect Parks or Ofori. Their teams wouldn’t release them.
Protect Seba. Protect GMS. I think you protect Mata. But I’m not sure there.
 
The rule is not to protect your best 11 players. It's to protect your best 11 players taking into account their roster cost.

You have a starter and a backup. The starter is well paid (TAM money), and the team thinks it can get a like player for a similar pay. The backup is really good in that role and makes close to the league minimum. In this case, the backup is probably the better one to protect.

would have rather protected Rocha or Seb on that list.

also - looking at the list from every team on the MLS website... it doesn't make sense at all. Teams have listed players who are no longer with the team. for example. LAG listed Zlatan. lol

Also e.g., Parkhurst is retiring. This happens every year and isn't hard to figure out. The contracts don't expire the day after MLS Cup. They run to somewhere in the middle of the offseason. As long as you have an active contract you end up on one of the lists. Further, Zlatan's new team is not in an open transfer window so he cannot be officially transferred yet.
