2025 Roster and Transfer Discussion Thread

Striker is a tough position for a young player in MLS to fit in . Nearly every team invests DP/TAM money so the ability to crack the lineup and get minutes is probably the toughest out of any outfield position. If you look at his history, he basically was with a new team every 1-2 years so tough to blame the FO taking a flyer on him and then he goes. There's also a alt history, where he is probably still in Europe if Russia doesn't invade Ukraine.

Don’t know how true this is, but just shows the failures of David Lee. He knows that Martinez is a hot commodity. Maybe the transfer fee was low but bring in a DP striker anyhow.

Would wager the offer would have to be obscene like Santi's for Lee to consider it. Would likely ruin our playoff run this year plus would miss any potential big stage glow up next year with Alonso nearly guaranteed to feature in the World Cup for Costa Rica.

Whatever we’re paying Martinez isn’t enough. They’re going to have to sell him because it’s their financial model for the foreseeable future. And they’ll bring in another 19 year old who will fail because Lee gets the castoffs

Inspired by the Social Media thread discussion of Alonso for MVP (of team and/or league).

If you could lock 1 current player into a reasonable contract for the next 7 years, who would you most love to see stick around for that duration?

Justin Haak for me. Home grown players are fun. He's 24, gets better every season, can play multiple positions and is just entering his prime.

For 7 years, got a be Freese. He is at an age and position where he is still getting better, and may even be at peak for years 5-7.
Most matured field players will decline over a 7 year period, and developing young players may not reach the potential worthy of a 7 year commitment.

No question, if I get only one, it's Nico for me. I want the playmaker. I can fill in the other pieces.

I thought about Nico, and I would be thrilled if he stayed that long, but FootyLovin 's stipulation that is be a " reasonable contract for the next 7 years" made me steer clear of DPs. 7 years of a quality player in a capped roster slot feels like more valueable than a guy on DP deal that has no cap impact.

Stipulation was just meant to take money away as a limiting factor.

I like the trio who got votes - Nico, Freese, Haak.

Interesting no one made a case for Alonso after 2 15-goal seasons. Harder to believe in a 26 year old goal producer continuing to produce to age 33. I guess that rings true.

I'd love to lock in Alonso for seven years too, and I think he will absolutely be productive through age 33. But the stipulation was only one player.

It's like a rock band. There are tons of slick lead guitarists around. Lose one and you can find another. But a truly galactic bass player is tougher to come by, and they're the ones who set the tone and drive the tune in an authentically great outfit.

Reasonable enough, although I'd be more than happy to use a DP for Nico for his entire prime. He's worth it.

Keaton and Malachi officially out for the the rest season.

Alonso out 2-8 weeks, likely, for an adductor injury.

How did Sims/Lee not sign another striker for this team in the summer window. Raul and Nico were not enough. That dark horse pick for MLS Cup is deflated.

i think it was in an article somewhere... After bakrar was transferred out, Jansen was asked who he wanted as a replacement and he pointed to Reid. so may not have been on Sims/Lee this time around. Though, I do agree we need more quality attackers regardless. Ojeda seems to be improving slowly, but fernandez is still clueless and with martinez out, we don't have many high quality attacking options.

Well Reid didn't start when Alonso was "benched" for Miami. If Reid doesn't start against Red Bulls, I'm not too confident that Pascal think he's ready.

To be fair, Brad Sim is really good at spinning stuff. Before that answer I believe that he made a reference to NYCFC needing to be really sure when they spend money because of the renting situation, but then Pascal is like no I don't need another high profile signing because we have Seymour Reid? Doesn't sound grounded in reality
