2025 Roster and Transfer Discussion Thread

IIRC even if there are 3 DP and then 2026 comes around and talles is no longer in corinthians, i think the team has until first day of season to be roster compliant, so they can find him another loan like they did mitrita like every summer window.

right. they'd have to move him somehow. but given Lee's ability to manage the roster thus far, i'm not too confident in his abilities to make it all work.

I disagree that we are being impatient. This is now the third season since the Championship Era team was dismantled, and we are nowhere even close to being back at that level. The Club claims it wants to win trophies every year, but we don't have the roster to do it.

David Lee has had 3 seasons to rebuild the roster, and he is failing. It does not take 3 years to rebuild in MLS. 2023 was understandable. 2024 was a movement forward but not enough of a movement forward. 2025, so far, despite better-than-expected-results, is unacceptable how many roster holes we have.

That's not impatience. We've been patient. We understood what 2023 was, and we understood 2024 was about the guys we brought in. This year should be about results, and so far it's been about having 5 teenagers on our gameday roster because we literally don't have enough players to fill out a squad. This is embarrassing.
Agreed. But I was using impatient in a different context. Think "anxious."

In any event, as I said, I'm ... anxious too. And the latest comments from David were a bit too sanguine for my taste. Sure, in the big picture, we have a lot of runway ahead and plenty of opportunity to improve in time for the playoffs. But as supporters, we want a dynamic, winning team now.

[P.S. Sorry for the late reply. All my alerts disappeared for some reason, and my security is blocking desktop notifications. ]

Exactly. There is no reason not to fill that spot now. David Lee's paralysis by analysis needs to end.

There was a time KdB would automatically be linked to us
But we've never once signed a Man City player on the down slope of his career (Lampard being a very particular situation not really fitting that model).
And I've never understood the concept even, since the player decides where he wants to go live. Not MCFC, and not CFG.

I remember the assumption that Vincent Kompany would sunset here. And we still have the silly talk about Pep coming here next, as if that isn't lolworthy to begin with! It never made much sense, but it was always bandied about.

I was surprised to see less Angelino/Facey types after the early days. Good young players, potentially borderline EPL starters but not cracking the elite MC lineup. Wanting to get professional meaningful minutes in front of real crowds in MLS. I expected that to be a key part of our model.

By the time guys like that are able to contribute here, they're also ready to contribute someplace else in Europe anyway.

The Pigeons dug themselves that 2-0 hole and full credit to head coach Pascal Jansen: he made two subs in the 40th minute and his side controlled the rest of the game. They had more than enough chances to dig themselves all the way out, but were ultimately killed by Alonso Martínez’s penalty miss just before the break.

I think he probably learned something about which guys he trusts, and which he doesn’t.

(We think) Nick Cushing got sacked because he didn't play the U22 signings to show off their talent. Well, now Pascal pulls Julian at the 40'. Ojeda is mostly on the bench in favor of Hannes Wolf. Maybe the signings were all wrong in the end.

An old, busted up KDB? I'll take him. 😆

Will CFG break their no-old-guys rule for a Man City legend?

Back in the early days of NYCFC, I would've said absolutely. The club leaned hard into the Man City connection—Pep and City stars visiting, NYCFC holding preseason in England, and plenty of cross-club content on social media. At the time, it felt like NYCFC was a City Football Group outpost designed to build fandom for Man City, and it seemed inevitable that we'd eventually see a City legend on the NYCFC roster.

Looking back, though, it might’ve been the reverse. CFG may have been using the Premier League brand to generate buzz around a new MLS team. Fast forward to today, and that marketing pipeline feels almost nonexistent. There's little crossover in promotion, and the connection between the clubs feels more technical than cultural.

But with a new stadium finally on the horizon and a player of KDB’s stature potentially available, maybe the tide will turn. If they ever were going to make an exception to their "no aging stars" rule, this might be it. And hey, given how pale KDB is, maybe we actually have a leg up on Miami and the California teams.

That said, those Saudi Arabian cash bags are hard to pass up, and I'd bet they win out in the end.

Miami’s allocation rights really only mean that they get compensation if he signs with another MLS club. Neither Miami nor the league can tell KDB where he must play in MLS.
Meanwhile we’re sitting on a pile of GAM we could trade for his rights.
Not saying it will happen. But the allocation thing is misdirection at best.
