Hopefully, the departure of Lee ups our chances of keeping him.
I think they'd be crazy to let him go at this point. He's versatile like Sands but can also play box to box if we need it, which Sands didn't really have. He's homegrown too and that's a huge roster benefit isn't it? Jansen likes versatility so I would imagine he would want Haak to stay.
Pascal had him out there for 34 starts and over 3,000 minutes. I'm sure Justin has a job if he wants one.
And as much as I hate to say it, we don't know what's going to happen with Keaton, which means our double pivot is a little up in the air. If we keep Justin, that nails down one role.
It truly is a wild quote, though. I have no idea why David Lee would say something like that. It's the coach's job.
It probably would have been during the time between the Cushing sacking and the Pascal arrival. David Lee (and/or Manchester/London) were solely in charge of personnel decisions.
I've said it before, it would have been hard to justify a contract for Haak last year. Remember he had only broken into the XI for just a few matches very late in the season. Most fans had him penciled in our lineup with cautious optimism for this year, but nobody really had him as a lock. In hindsight, we probably screwed up, but we have no idea how high his demands were last season.

He's the CSO. Seems reasonable for him to discuss this, especially if it was the beginning of the season and they were talking contract. I doubt even Pascal had Justin Haak penciled in as an every game starter to be perfectly fair.
Maybe not, but in fairness to Justin, he looked really damn good in the closing handful of matches of 2024.
He did but even Pascal talked beginning of this season that it wasnt ideal to have a right footed player playing LCB. His flexibility defintetely saved us during large stretches of games this season in hindsight! Kudos to him. Hopefully he gets a bag (hopefully from us).

Also fair enough, although from my perspective, it's not ideal for a sporting director to step on the coach's prerogative. Even if it was during the interregnum — which it apparently was — it strikes me as David getting outside the lines. Or at least getting a substantial amount of chalk on his boots.
It's also a little ironic, if in fact he left for Sporting KC because he was getting static from above.

The way Haak made the quote makes me think it was part of the exit interviews at the end of the season. Haak expressed a desire for more playing time (which he expressed publicly after the season ended), and Lee told him why he didn't think it would happen. Seems fairly commonplace to me, honestly. And yes, with how quickly they fired Cushing, it would appear there was no coach in those exit interviews.

I saw that report on Twitter and immediately dismissed it as complete bullshit. Doesn't make any sense. David Alaba is not selling tickets in Etihad Park.

Our homegrown players are wildly underpaid compared to their internationally recruited counterparts. Gray ($215K) and KOT ($247K) are multi-season starters making just over half of what Illenic ($392K) gets to sit on the bench. At CB things are even worse with Haak ($266K) making considerably less than Tana ($338K) and about 1/4 of what we are paying Raul ($813K)
MLS/NYCFC is looking like one of those crappy companies where the only way for a long-time employee to get a decent raise is to leave and come back. I wouldn't blame any of those guys if they pushed for a move.
Haak is the most notable at $265,833. Guy is about to get a raise as his contract is over and he's free agency eligible.
