2026 Roster and Transfer Discussion Thread

haha, not me, but I still think if Julian was going to be here for depth, the only position he could have played was ST. Pascal gave up on playing him on the wing, and those weird sub appearances at CAM totally destroyed our offensive flow. Ultimately, Julian moving on and the team getting a more capable player is the best solution.

Edit: just to add, I don't use any other social media, so all my poorly thought-out takes and half baked ideas are NYCFCforums exclisves.
This feels like that phone game “Among Us”. Instead of survivor for the players we should do Among Us for the forum members. Who’s the intern? Who’s the tweeter(?)?

The team hasn’t sniffed neither the Champions League in half a decade
The more I think about how to evaluate the team the more I like this as the standard. Any year we make Champions League is a success. Any year we miss that mark is a failure.

That would be an ambitious team I'd love to be behind. We could even fail to win and silverware for 5 years running. If we made Champions League every year I'd consider that a successful run. The silver will come. Keep making Champions League and you are a strong team who will win your fair share eventually.

It's back to the Champions Cup now, yes?

Anyway, it's a good standard. I've always said our primary goal should always be the MLS Cup since it's our league title, and the Supporters Shield is the best measure of consistency. But at the same time, we should also be shooting for competition silverware.

Let's win. We're in business to win.

Champions League is a high bar, but I agree it's a decent definition of an ambitious team. For me, just showing that they are giving their best effort to try to qualify for the Champions League across all of the available options would be the bar. You can qualify for the Champions League in any of the following ways:

  1. MLS Cup Winner: The champion earns a spot, often with a bye to the Round of 16.
  2. Leagues Cup: The top three finishers (Champion, Runner-up, Third Place) qualify directly for the CCC.
  3. Supporters' Shield (Regular Season Standings): The top teams in overall points, after accounting for those qualified via other methods, secure berths.
  4. U.S. Open Cup or Canadian Cup: Winner earns a CCC spot.
  5. Conference Regular Season Winners: The top teams in each conference's regular season standings can also qualify
Going 2/3rds of a season with significant holes in the roster takes us out of contention for 4 out of the 5 options. So for the last few years its cup or bust. That's not ambition, and it's not erased by some fortunate playoff runs.

When did Yañez go?

On the website they didn't but in the press release: "Forward Zidane Yañez will not travel to preseason and will remain in New York to get further medical evaluations. "
Okay, it's a knock then. Why the heck wouldn't they just copy and paste that into the post on the site? 🤦‍♂️

I really would love to know how the PR game is run. How much of this sloppiness is MLS and how much of it is team-specific?

It's the team. MLS doesn't run the content on their website. Their press shop took a major hit a few years ago when Woody Wilder and Nicole Chayet left. They lost all their institutional knowledge and the people there now haven't got a clue.

I guess I will put Yañez back in. I am assuming the reports about Fernandez are true, but I will add him with a question mark.

The schedules on the NYCFC site have not been updated with the LAFC change. They still show the game in October.

That explains a lot. Hopefully as the revenue machine revs up, we can get to another level here. After all, we're in New York City, for crying out loud. It's not like there's a shallow talent pool or something.
