Euro 2016

He's actually scored a number of goals for country - he really helped get them to the Euros.
Wasn't that mostly before he came to us, though? I had the sense he's been a bit of a mess ever since being here, like the whole experience messed with his confidence. Maybe I'm wrong. I actually am more well-disposed to him than most people on the board, btw. I felt bad for him; he just didn't fit here and didn't connect in limited chances. I'd like to see him do well, although I'll admit I was rooting for Wales today and glad he missed.

Since he left us, he's scored some goals but really only for country and not club.

I always felt like he was in the wrong system with Kreis since balls were never crossed into the box. He got a bit of a raw deal, not that he didn't hurt himself with the few chances, but the system was so 180 for him.

I have to pin a lot of the blame for the England draw on just poor decision making around the box. Time after time they'd have a very fluid buildup and then whoever was in possession at the edge of the box would just make the wrong pass. I'm looking at you, Raheem Sterling.

The problem with England is in the past our fans have caused mayhem wherever we went, we built a bad reputation... Now we are in a situation were hundreds maybe thousands of our known trouble makers/hooligans are banned from travelling abroad during tournaments and most people at England games want to watch the game rather than throw glass bottles... But due to our reputation folk from backwards shitholes like Russia see us as fair game.

They should ship our banned hooligans over to a field in Belgium and let the Russians know they are there, let them beat the shite out of each other and keep this crap away from decent decent people who want to watch football in France.

There should be serious thought given to stripping Russia of the World Cup their fans are a disgrace and I can only imagine how bad they might get on home turf with numbers .

Yes, but if they haven't stripped Russia or Qatar yet they're not going to ever.

Violence in soccer can be attributed to one thing: regionalism. Simple "my (city, country etc) is better than yours and i want you to know it. I want you to know that my (city, country etc.) is tough thsn yours as well". Regionalism has been active in the history of humans since the start of civilization. It fuels progress through competition, but that is not the case here. What im saying is you cant stop it. Its part of human nature (to anextent).

In fairness, alcohol is just as much to blame. There are some (like the Russian ultras who specifically travelled to start fights) who will fight no matter what, but especially where England are concerned, these days the ones who get involved in the clashes around the bars tend to be the most unassuming and mild people when sober.

There is a great book called "Among The Thugs" by Bill Buford, published in 1990. The author joined the violent soccer culture over the course of a few years in the 1980s when things were much worse than today. He wanted to know what it felt like to become part of a mob. It is both fascinating and scary. He tried to tread the line between joining and immersion on one hand and rational distance on the other but more than once found himself losing control over himself.

This, from today's "Goalmouth" email by Howler Magazine, hit a little close to home:

Goalmouth Top Tip: Place pictures of your family around the television so you can remind yourself of their existence while you watch Euro and Copa America matches all day and night.

As the Kids These Days like to say, "it me".

Gotta love the shitty opinions of asshole right-wing nationalist Russian politicians:

Russian Football Union official: Nothing wrong with fans fighting http://espnfc.com/russia/story/2892...ion-official-nothing-wrong-with-fans-fighting

'"I don't see anything wrong with fans fighting," the MP from the nationalist Liberal Democratic party wrote on Twitter. "Quite the opposite, the guys did well. Keep it up!"

"I don't understand those politicians and officials who are criticising our fans. We should defend them, and then we can sort it out when they come home."

"In nine out of 10 cases, football fans go to games to fight, and that's normal. The lads defended the honour of their country and did not let English fans desecrate our motherland. We should forgive and understand our fans."'
