FIFA Women's World Cup 2019 - France

The galling thing is that it has been better before, in the 2018 WC, the 2018/19 UCL and currently in MLS.

It's very difficult to escape the feeling that the only thing different about the WWC is that the calls of the refs on the field are being trusted less than we're used to in other competitions. I wonder what single variable could possibly be responsible for that...
I see this to a certain degree, but I really don't think it has been all that much better in MLS. There are some who use it well, but ultimately, there's a ton of room for improvement in MLS.

I do think that in the 2018 WC, it was used very well.

I have also heard a lot of grumblings that its use in the current Copa America has been pretty shitty. But I'll defer to others on that as I have barely seen any of that tournament outside of 1 or 2 highlights.

And then the ref calls the real soft penalty in the box against Spain.

I think it’s lame if the match is decided by that call but Spain was on borrowed time.

Studs to the leg isnt soft. Surprised she didnt also pick up a yellow once VAR looked at it.

whats odd was that she made her re-spot the ball like 3 times and it was never placed incorrectly. As long as the ball is touching the spot its good.

Yeah, it was a clear raking of the side of the leg. A clear foul in the box. Now, I do agree that there wasn't a massive advantage gained by the defense with the foul. In terms of danger, there really wasn't a ton, whether or not she was fouled. But it was a clear foul and seeing it slowed down on the VAR was obvious.

And yeah, the re-spotting of the ball was odd. I know the angles we have don't show it the best, but it looked like it was touching the spot. I did enjoy how after a few times of the ref asking her about it, Rapinoe just said fuck it and moved it back much more than she needed to.

Also, speaking of raking. I thought Renard should have seen red in yesterday's game for studs straight to the shin of one of the Brazilian players. It seemed pretty obvious to me, but perhaps there was some sympathy shown for already screwing over France on a previous review.

For real, though, can anyone justify Ellis' approach to (not, until 85') making any subs? I couldn't for the life of me understand what the hell she was thinking.

What the actual hell was that handball call on Japan? These penalty decisions in all competitions recently are getting out of hand (no put intended.) She was clearly moving her hand back to get it out of the way and the circumstances around it as well as other calls in previous games have been quite "no-call" territory imo.

its a tough one for me. because while it wasnt intentional she was making her body kinda big before she tried moving it away. if it never touches her arm its probably going in the goal. I just dont know anymore. all i know is that the rules are way too subjective and they need to do something about it.

I don’t think there is a way to make the handball rule objective and not subjective.

To me it looked more like she was turning to see where the ball was going and was balancing herself, which is totally a natural thing to do. She had just enough time to see where the ball was and the "oh shit" moment when she pulled her hand back was enough to see for me. If we say all handballs cause penalties, sure I'll give it. But if we say only [intentional] handballs cause penalties, this one was in my opinion 100% unintentional, and giving her a yellow card just rubbed salt in the wounds.

Changes to the 2019-20 season:

The following ‘handball’ situations, even if accidental, will be a free kick:

  • the ball touches a player’s hand/arm which has made their body unnaturally bigger
The following will not usually be a free kick, unless they are one of the above situations:

  • the ball touches a player’s hand/arm which is close to their body and has not made their body unnaturally bigger

FIFA defends refereeing, VAR criticism in press conference

"Collina then went on to verbalize about how fans must get used to the black and white nature of VAR which will give referees the ability to enforce rules such as offside or encroachment to a T, much like goal line technology helps decide whether a goal is in or not."

Interesting defense of VAR. I appreciate Collina's argument really. It's consistent with my take that if you like VAR you like the rules being enforced exactly. I think the reason it has become a topic I can't shut up about is my frustration seeing the same people (1) say they support VAR, but (2) complain when it works exactly as it always works in every sport making making ticky tack calls. It's an inherent part of VAR. If you don't want rules enforced exactly, don't use VAR. If you want to use VAR, stop complaining that it works the way it always works.

Not looking for a political debate just sharing.

Rapinoe: "Im not going to the fucking White House"

Trump: "I am a big fan of the American Team, and Women’s Soccer, but Megan should WIN first before she TALKS! Finish the job! We haven’t yet invited Megan or the team, but I am now inviting the TEAM, win or lose."

"Megan should never disrespect our Country, the White House, or our Flag, especially since so much has been done for her & the team. Be proud of the Flag that you wear. The USA is doing GREAT!"
