Expansion Rumors Megathread

"Garber said Sacramento, seen as the other favorite, is MLS ready. "They have some things to finalize with their ownership that I think would make them optimum," Garber said. "We've said for many years there's a great level of support for the game in Sacramento and I think there's great interest in joining Major League Soccer."

Jeez, Meh Whitman was in, then out, then back in, now out again?
It's chaotic alright.
Wonder if they are the reason MLS delaying announcement of 2nd team.

It has to be. They might be in a "get your shit together and your in" situation. Although Cincinatti could also clear some stadium hurdles in the next few month which may give them a leg up.
Clearly MLS is pushing to have fewer things up in the air before officially approving.

I think Sacramento is who MLS wants but they don't like Nagle enough. And Nagle refuses to give up lead investor status. He tried bringing in other investors but only gave them small slivers of the pie, which isn't enough to motivate them in the eyes of MLS. They asked for more equity and Nagle said no, this is my club. Hence the standoff. Nagle is blocking himself.

Same thing that happened in Miami most likely. Beckham was overplaying his hand and couldn't secure a major investor. Sounds like after years of delays and pressure, he gave in. MLS (and maybe Meg Whitman) knows Nagle will as well.

If not, it comes down to what MLS thinks of the Detroit ownership. Was it all real estate motivated? Do those deep pockets actually want to run a team?

Else, Cincy. The bid you can't really go wrong with accepting.

what stadium issues does FCC have?

watch Detroit get it in the end

They need to find a way to get Detroit in. That would be the most impressive ownership group in MLS

if both sacramento or FCC dont get their shit together its going to them....i think this the only reason the delay is happening. and it seems sacramento is in front of FCC too. if nothing is solved then MLS will say they got no one to blame but themselves...even though i have absolutely no idea what the soccer scene in detriot is outside of DCFC....and i know those guys hate this. would anyone support the team?

Pacific NW is stunning. Not for everyone. You have to really want to live there.
Echoes the old joke about that part of the world - “it’s a great place to live, but you wouldn’t want to visit.”

In my very, very limited experience, the people are utterly douchetastic. It’s like being perpetually stuck in an Arsenal supporters bar in Brooklyn where everyone is dressed for a possible climbing trek popping off at any moment.

It's a great place to visit for easy access to wilderness, coffee and produce. Also very progressive, in a sort of abstract way. However not very diverse and deeply, deeply overcast for 9 months a year, both of which are absolute deal breakers for me.

It looks like its finally happening in Miami.

"Mas wouldn’t say the exact date of the team-launch news conference, but indicated it would be by the end of the month. Two other sources close to negotiations said it would be at the end of January. The team name and preliminary uniform designs would be unveiled at that event, which is expected to be attended by Beckham, his partners, and MLS Commissioner Don Garber."

I understand announcement of the name, but the uniform? LAFC is less than 50 days from playing its first MLS game and haven't announced it's uniform.

Just please Miami Vice FC as the name.

Merch sales double as free advertising. My attempt to justify it. Uniforms have to be fire for it to work tho.

Btw, trying to think outside the box on the name - people like to predict Miami United because of Beckham's Manchester United connection. But what about Galácticos Miami FC? It's both a play on his LA Galaxy connection and the fact that he was one of the Galácticos signings for Real Madrid in 2003. Plus, the market is supposedly one of the few that superstars will want to play in.

I am sick and tired of FC's and Uniteds.

Inter Miami would be something different, I am all for it.
Just a reminder that I posted this last May.

As of yet, the new team does not have an official name. However, the ownership group has used the names Miami Vice and Miami Current when referring to the franchise in presentations.

Interesting. First I heard of this. I'm not necessarily sold they'll pick one of those names, but I will read into this that they are considering "American-style" naming conventions for the team.

EDIT: Also, from this June 2017 article: http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/mls/article154744804.html

“In the background, we’ve spent a lot of time on our training academy and where it should be and what it should do, also have been working on a management team, our name and logo and colors. We are further down the road than people would suspect.

Looks like they are indeed ready to announce their full branding. Sweet.
