FIFA World Cup 2018 - Group F (Germany, Mexico, Sweden, South Korea)

Germany didn't take Bastian Schweinsteiger. Chicago Fire can't win World Cup. Germany last in Group F.

I guess the writing was on the wall for germany when they lost to austria prior to the tournament for the first time in 30 odd years.

Saying that, you dont expect germany to fail this badly. Low will surely have to go.

4 Of the last 5 champs have been knocked out first round in the following tournament. It’s like a curse.

Great Mexico - they love the sport.

Im anti Mexico in qualifiers.... But since the US didn't qualify i cheer for the America's.... The new world teams :) except Argentina

Me too. but I also love the the Argentina's team. Happy they are on the next round. I love the finnesse and elegance they bring to the game.

The VAR: The replays of of the last goal that South Korea team scored were not clear enough . Although the replays from several angles were not clear to me. To me it seemed and offside just like Neuer that was arguing with Ref.The last few 3-4 minutes , I wanted a miracle for Germany. Its was a gutsy decision for Mannuel Neuer He was blamed for the losss) to leave his post . as we say in Spanish "Poner todo en el asador" At this stage of the game put all the steaks toburn on the grill . It does not matter if your team is loosing by one goal or 10 goals. Sad to see you go Alemania. Adios

I think that was already decided.

I think they just played poorly. That said, how many freaking big chances did they miss every game? It seemed like a good many to me.

Werner didn’t fit the system they were playing and they didn’t have another option that could realistically play that many minutes.

Honestly, I would have picked him too. But to put Germany's reason for failing to get past the group stage on not picking Sane is... wait for it... inSane. Sorry, had to.

I want to rage and rant but I feel it would fall on deaf shoulders.
You seem to be the resident Germany guru, so what would you look at as the main variable of blame? We’re the players badly matched up, were they relying on too many old players? Were Lowe’s tactics and style dated and not effective after multiple cycles? Just bad luck - ie the opportunities were there but they didn’t capitalize?

Little bit of everything you mentioned. I'll break it down as to what I think went wrong (no essential order, just a list);

1. Lack of defense- Playing in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-1-4-1 would mean a need for a defensive midfielder, which Germany didn't play. Khedira and Kroos were solely dedicated to offensive duties, and didn't bother on defense. This left the CBs dry, as the outside backs were also used in a more attacking role. See: Mexico game. So much space for Mexico to counter against Hummels and Boateng and use their speed and space for numerous counters, as Kroos and Khedira were nowhere to be found because they were outside the box in the attacking third.
Goretzka maybe could've played there, but that's unknown as the only minutes he got were out of position on the wing. Gündogan is also a creative attacking minded midfielder, so bringing him on for Khedira didn't change anything. Rudy is really the only one to play midfield in a defensive mindset, and he unfortunately broke his nose in a weird accident.

2. Misused Striker- Werner is a great striker, when used in the correct role. He's incredibly fast and useful on the break, as seen with RBL. However, against 3 teams who were fine sitting back and loading the box, he's not going to get on the end of any crosses due to his size. Gomez should've been starting due to the reliance on Germany playing the ball out to the LB/RB in Kimmich/Hector. Werner was moved outside for the 2nd half of the Sweden game, which was also the only half of play Germany scored. He assisted (or 2nd assisted) the 1st goal and was fouled to setup the 2nd. He could use his speed and spacial abilities, which is what he thrives on. Also, bringing only Gomez and not calling up Sandro Wagner was a shit call-up on Löw's part. Germany had more solid chances with the ball being played out and whipping in crosses to Gomez, who is big and tall enough to take on CBs.
Also, Kimmich will be blamed for killing a lot of attacks, but he was put in a shit spot. He makes a run down the side, and who is he supposed to cross the ball to? Werner isn't going to win anything in the box due to his size. He ultimately ended up passing back to the midfield since there was nothing going on around the box.

3. Lack of Heart- I don't know what it is, but a lot of the players looked disinterested. In the friendlies, through the games, the only awakening they had was giving up a goal. Why does it take being down a goal for 20 minutes to wake you up? I had hope after Jogi brought the young guns to plunder in the Confed Cup, but I guess the old dusty knees of the experienced players was too much. Should've played more young guns.

Just a whole bunch of shit. There's probably more, but now I'm too sad and tired to keep writing.
Go Croatia.

While I’m relieved that Germany is out, I will say - I feel your pain. I felt it in 2010 and I feel it now. And here’s the rub- it doesn’t get better. Ever. Until they win again. Not winning the cup is one thing. Not getting out of the group phase or worse- NOT EVEN QUALIFYING- is a damn hot knife twisting in your heart.

You’re in good company even if we wear different colors. (Sigh)

Germany took a bunch of younger, hungrier players to the Confed Cup and steamrolled everyone. They took the same old bunch to this World Cup and are on an early flight home.
Kinda like the US in world cup qualifying. I was bitching to anyone who would listen that after 2014, we should have went full youth for the fall friendly's, January Camp, WC qualifying and the gold cup. Then in 2016 you bring the older guys in form back into the team with the younger guys who now have some national team experience. Instead JK ran out the same WC roster for the next 2 years.
