It might have been dubious for them to host it, but this was the most surprising & entertaining World Cup on record. Well done Russia.

You have to wonder how things might have unfolded if the penalty decision had gone the other way (which it easily could have). Half ends 1-1; Croatia don't feel the need to push their fullbacks up to start the second half - leaving themselves exposed to French counter attacks.

France basically built a 2-1 lead on luck while being outplayed, but to their credit they were much the better team in the second half.

whaaaaaaaaaaaaat, there is a direct financial incentive to having WC roster guys? I thought is was just a marketing thing. What are we getting paid for, lost salary time or is it an actual bonus?

Calculation of payments and allocations:

- Total number of players at the World Cup: 736 (32 teams x 23 players on each team)

- Total approximate number of days cumulatively of participation: 24,500

- Distribution amount (USD 209 million gross) is divided by the total number of days (approximately 24,500), which results in an amount per player per day of around USD 8,530 (subject to any taxes and deductions)

- The amount of around USD 8,530 is multiplied by the number of days each player is at the World Cup, starting two weeks before the Opening Match until the day following the last match of his team (total per player). The total per player is then distributed to the club (s) with which the player was registered during the previous two years.

Makes these fringey costa rican guys like little lotto tickets for financially struggling clubs. Might even earn the club more money than they cost in salary. Good god, FIFA shells out just north of $8,500 per day for every player in the World Cup? I'm sure nobody involved is raking any of that off.
