Formation Speculation

Fringe national team is what I'd project. Best case would be making the WC squad as a late game sub option, but that is likely a huge stretch. Of course, that assumes we don't have Wondo spots. Basically, Wondo is his ceiling. But Mullins combines better and is more skilled, less of a poacher.
I know national team wise Wondo isn't that popular, but damn he is a really good MLSer. He has scored 93 goals during his time in MLS, thats amazing. If Mullins can become Wondo he is an absolute steal.

Yes I'm still convinced Lampard's a CAM, and yes I'm convinced he'll be playing at the beginning of the season.

He won't ever score that much unless he ends up with someone serving it up to him. He passes too much. I meant more about what his max level would be, not style. Mullins is not a poacher. He's a forward who can run onto balls and combine. Wondo just sneakily hangs around the back line, looking for a chance to shoot or some scraps to clean up. He'll try to come back to help his midfield, but he's kind of worthless on that front.

I think Mullins was a great pick. I was almost surprised that NER didn't orotect him over Davies. I'm not sure we would have taken Davies.

Seems in line with what we have been thinking, except Fitzgerald starting in goal, but exciting to see how close we are too fielding a team. One week!

Mix can't play the 10 but Lampard "obviously" can? Also, it is my understanding that John likely won't even be ready for the opener. I'm much higher on Mendoza as well, and am willing to give a bigger benefit of the doubt to Calle.

Villa---Mullins
----------Mix
Grabavoy---Calle
---------Jacobson
Wingert-Mendoza-Hernandez-Williams

That line-up so wrong in many ways.

From top to bottom:
- Villa-Mullins, agree right now, they are the starters
- McNamara- Mix, Mix for sure but if Kreis is making a lineup with essentially 2 attacking mids, he is going with Velasquez not a 2nd year rookie who didn't just play for him who is coming off a year-long injury
- AJ - Grabovoy - this could happen but not they way Hudson put it. AJ is the starting CDM at this point, he is Kreis's Beckerman at NYC for the time being. Yes Grabovoy can play it, but AJ would be better.
- Wingert, Hernandez, John, Williams- I see Brovsky over Wingert as starting LB although Kreis might go with the vet he is familiar with, I think that will change over the season. Williams and Hernandez are pretty solid but John won't play until May at the earliest. In his place it will be Wingert, Mendoza or Watson. My money is on Mendoza.
- Lets set this straight: Meara was brought in to start; Saunders is there as the fall-guy if Meara gets hurt or fails and Fitz is just there as the backup. No the NASL is not the MLS, sorry.

I disagree with him on twitter A LOT. He is a fantastic writer, probably too good at times. But his soccer sense seems to be lacking. I could look like an idiot, but as of right now, there is no way in heck John, McNamara and/or Akira start.

Meara was brought in to, hopefully, start all season long. If he does that it will force Red Bulls to give him a similar role next season or sale him. Akira is the clear #3.

I agree with Brovsky on the bench but only because he barely even got on the practice field on loan and rarely even played for the reserve team. That spells massive trouble in my eyes.

I also definitely think Velasquez starts over McNamara.

I agree Maera was brought in to be the starter, but depending how preseason goes I could see Akira getting a run out early. Then again if they're just concerned about Maera not having recent competitive matches behind them they could start Saunders since he did fine on loan.

There's no way we would trade an experienced MLS player to LOAN someone if they ain't gonna start. Jacobson is a defensive midfielder and that's where he'll play, Grabavoy on the left probably.
Back 4: Brovsky-Hernandez-Mendoza-Williams IMO.

If we are assuming a diamond, which is likely based on Kreis precedeng.

Villa - Mullins
Velasquez
Ned Mix
Jacobson
Wingert Mendoza Hernandez Williams
Meara

For some reason, I think he goes with a 4-2-3-1. Maybe even a 4-2-2-2 - something that Citeh would line up in. I just don't see, long term, how you play the Diamond with what we have. 4-2-2-2 could have the back four, then Jacobson and Grabavoy, then Lampard and Mix with Mullins and Villa up top.

If I am Kreis, I am playing Velasquez on the wing and Mix starts as attacking mid. But essentially thats my starting lineup for the beginning of camp in Manchester.
I thought about that, I just think Mix on the right is better for the shape of the team. However depending on how he games play out putting Mix off the strikers is a viable option.

Think Mix has to be central, and allow more speed out on the wing in traditional wingers. Think it will work nice with speed out wide getting balls into the box for our forwards, while allowing a good ball playing CM to play balls through into goal. That way if teams sit back we can attack them wide, or if they play a higher line we can still get them through the middle.

We should just run a 4-2-3-1.

Our lack of attacking players and our weak defense are glaring negatives about the team thus far. However, I'm no expert considering I hadn't even heard of some of the guys we've got on roster.

I'm thinking the 4-2-2-2 is the best way to play an effective "diamond" with our current roster as well. Just rotate that diamond a little bit so Mix and Lampard (or Mac or Velasquez) can play hybrid 8/10 roles together, and Grabavoy and Jacobson can cover and take turns running forward. Like this:

----Villa-------------Mullins
-----------------------------------
---------Mix--------------------
------------------Lampard---
-----------------------------------
----Grabavoy----------------
-----------------Jacobson-----
-----------------------------------
-Wingert--------Williams
---Hernandez-Mendoza-

Not that this is significantly different from the 4-4-2 diamond.
