Some good stuff on Soccer-In-The-City about the Cows resurgence and their new tactical approach.

Their formation has been described as a 3-3-3-1, a 3-4-3 and 3-6-1. On the podcast the guys said it's really a lot like a 3-1-5-1 with Felipe sitting in front of a back 3, BWP at striker and the other 5 guys moving fluidly between them.

Any thoughts?

PV should just watch the '98 WC match between USA/Germany to see how easily they thrashed the secret 361 that Steve Sampson played. Granted, it was lined up with two DMid behind a flat four in midfield, so slightly different alignment, but it still got roasted.

On paper it doesn't look that much different than their 4231...they just dropped a holding midfielder for centerback and move the fullbacks up to wingbacks. Royer and Muyl who were the wide midfielders in the 4231 have more latitude to go inside with the wingback responsible for providing more of the width.

With the 1-5 players at the top of their formation pressing so high there should be room on the wings for Jack and ideally Lewis to find space to operate in. Thankfully PV has come around to the idea of allowing the team to play the long ball when appropriate which we will need to do liberally to punish them for pressing. Thankfully our CBs are much better in possession this year.

To me the best way to attack them would be to start the play from the back as we normally do to invite the press up but then skip the middle with long balls out to the wings. Ring can stay deep as he has been doing to provide an outlet for the backline and often act as the player sending the balls to the wings. Villa stays high and occupies their CBs and occasionally swaps into LW spot grab a ball in space or if the CBs track with him to open space for Harrison on the right. Maxi and Herrera take turns with one staying high and tucking in under Villa and the other dropping back with Ring to provide passing outlets against the press as needed.

We will get killed if we try to work the ball through the middle going 3 on 6. They will punish us if we play TMac on the wing because they can shade away from him knowing he doesn't have the speed to punish them for doing so. No matter what we do they will force some amount of turn overs so we need the recovery speed of Ring and Herrera in the field, Pirlo will kill us in transition if he's out there.

And most of their supporters look like they are right out of the original Cantina scene.

who? us?

The formations and tactics that get you wins vs Montreal, Minnesota, SJ and New England, do not work vs better teams. I hope they come with some dopey ass clown formation tomorrow with six guys trying to get into the attack. That looks like there will be plenty of room for us to operate, once we bitchslap their midfield again like last time.
