There's no way they could get a playable surface into the Stadium for February 26 without significant expense, above and beyond the already significant expense just to turn the lights on and bring security in, etc.

Yeah, I think the playing surface is the far bigger issue than turning the water back on and winterizing the pipes, etc. But they usually have a really crappy surface as it is for our March games, the field doesn't look that good until the Yankees season starts. So it stands to reason it would have been really difficult, even if it's only a 3-week difference.

I'm pretty sure "turning the lights on" was a euphemism there. He was talking about all the difficulties of opening a stadium in February. There are concerns, for example, about whether the pipes will freeze if water is turned on. It's stuff they can work on, but it's hard to get that stadium game-ready earlier than normal.

YS and RBA are both outdoor stadiums, both would have the same game-ready concerns. Turning the water on is not as big of a concern as you are making it out to be. The pipes are either insulated or they aren't, and if they aren't then YS would never have been able to be open with the temperature below 32F in the past - when it drops below freezing, water in a pipe has to be in constant motion, however slow that is, to remain in liquid form, and I guarantee the team does not drain the pipes after every match we've played in the past. So when they've turned it on in the past, it's stayed on before/after, even when we've had those blistery cold matches.

The real cost to opening a stadium is the staffing and concessions, but that's a cost that any stadium would have, so likely a push with some degree of small deviation for compactness of RBA vs enlarged YS, but even that is driven by tix sales and closed-off sections. The real cost is the rental fee and profit the Yankees ask for - reportedly $1M verse whatever Harrison is charging, which is assuredly quite a bit less.

So anybody know why this game is at 6 pm local time? Can’t be for CR tv as they are one hour behind. I do see that there are other CCL matches at 8 and 10 that evening. Could that be the driving factor?

I don’t know if I have ever seen a weeknight game that early. There was the infamous Chris Heck RBNJ special where RBNJ scheduled a midweek game at 1 pm in the middle of July, but 6 pm?

probably set that way for viewing purposes. 10pm games are actually 7pm local time. so it's not much different from our situation.

This match may be a road to far, but had we played MLS Cup there, the irony would have been priceless.

Really on the fence with this one. Coming from Rockland County, supporters up here are few and far between. I could drive into the city to a watch party, but am I really driving into midtown on a Wednesday at 5pm? No. So, if the weather is decent I might just go to the match.
