MLS and Apple Broadcasting Deal

Oops. LOL. Don't post while crying, kids.
As in you’re crying and calling us kids? Or you got crying kids? Either way it’s probably not a good time to be posting.

Also, just to comment on this; $80 really ain’t so bad for a full season USOC, CCL, Leagues Cup etc.. Now I wonder what if I purchase a single SS ticket for $440 for the year and I already save $80 by purchasing it…. I wonder if they’ll give me my founding member status back for a brick (Bc now they promised one!)

pretty sure that's been official since the deal was announced awhile back.

also - perusing twitter and seems to be a lot of people unhappy with the subscription pricing. most don't seem to realize the annual subscription would save them money. but also a good bunch still think it's too expensive because "they only care about watching their team and nothing else"

personally, i'll keep re-upping my AppleTV+ free trial and get the annual $80 plan if i can while under a free trial. lol
I shouldn't have but you prompted me to look. Besides the stupidity, there's also a lot of willful negativity from the MLS-sucks Eurosnob crowd.
But yeah, the people who just want their own team are the enigmas. How cheap do they think anyone would offer a stand alone price for just their MLS team? I think they think they got it for actual free with their cable package. It's crazy how much the RSN/cable bundling setup distorted things.

A selection of MLS and Leagues Cup matches, including some of the biggest playoff matchups, will also be available at no additional cost to Apple TV+ subscribers, with a limited number of matches available for free on the Apple TV app.

What I'm trying to figure out is, as an Apple TV+ subscriber, am I ensured access to every local-market (i.e. NYCFC) game? Or is that not necessarily included in "a selection of MLS and Leagues Cup matches... at no additional cost..."? I do like watching other MLS games, but not sure I want to fork over 13/month to ensure I get access to every MLS game, as long as I can catch some of them.... unless of course I am not guaranteed NYCFC games. Then I'll have to fork it over.

I would bet money that the games will vary week-to-week. My guess is that every team will have a similar number of games behind the extra paywall to make sure as many fans as possible pay for it. I doubt you're going to have, for example, LAFC play 31 games outside the paywall and have Cincy play 3.

Not that this helps anyone, but I’ve been paying for a vpn that costs more than this subscription so I’m happy to cut my costs

if you're already an appleTV+ subscriber, it's just 80/yr so less than $7/month. that's the only way to ensure you can watch all NYCFC games.

if you're a STH then you have full access included in your season ticket package.

VPN is for more than just watching out of market content! security and privacy are important too.

Interesting summary article about the Apple TV deal, from an Apple news site’s perspective.

MLS signs 4-year "linear" broadcast deal with Fox to broadcast 34 regular season games/year and 8 playoff games/year on Fox & FS1, along with Fox Deportes. This includes at least 15 regular season games on Big Fox. Also, 16 games in the Leagues Cup, though none past the octofinals (Round of 16). MLS Cup will also be on Fox networks for all 4 years.

Also an agreement with Univision networks for coverage of the Leagues Cup.

No deal with ESPN for games - so, what will Jon Champion and Taylor Twellman do with themselves? Also, no Univision broadcasts of regular season games - THANK GOD.

Hopefully Taylor Twellman will still be a part of MLS coverage somehow -- I've always enjoyed his analysis and thought he did his research.

So, so glad to hear no more Univision games. That coverage was positively dreadful. Still, having only 34 MLS games on TV next year is going to be rough -- hopefully the league is not out of sight, out of mind.

It’ll prob be each week’s tent pole matchup. That’s as much as you can expect the regular audience to watch anyway. No casual fan or new to sport watcher is binging 3-4 matches on a weekend.

What I’m curious is how accessible are they making the apple subscription to bars? Hope they don’t charge an arm and a leg like NFL, maybe even incentivize places to carry matches with a trial package to start.

This. I never agreed with the Twellman hate. He's passionate and provides good color. Unless I want to take a nap. Then definitely give me Landon.

That's a big math problem on these streaming deals. Every bar patron is a potential subscriber. I think that's what the linear broadcast deals are there to offset.

I am surprised Univision did not push for any games of regular season or playoffs. They always liked to hype the MLS in their network. There was also that rumor in the athletic that Apple was interested and i think interviewed two of the announcers from TUDN that normally narrated the MLS games in Spanish. Maybe they transfer over for the spanish coverage.
