MLS and Apple Broadcasting Deal

With the consolidated schedule/overlapping games, they'll need at least a dozen play-by-play and color voices over the course of the season, so there are a lot of names yet to come.

Exactly. There are 14 games each week, and nearly all will be played within a few hours of each other on Saturday evenings. They are each going to need a different crew - and that's not taking into account that many will be broadcast in more than one language.

It also means that the crews will likely be on site. They don't gain any flexibility in scheduling by having them call games from a central location.

18 new hires. Nobody with an NYCFC connection. Three more Red Bulls connected hires: Shep Messing, Lloyd Sam, and Stefano Fusaro.

I'm not necessarily blaming MLS or Apple for this. I doubt they refused to make offers to Ian and Joe. More likely they just haven't made a deal and maybe Ian and Joe want different terms or pay than MLS is going to offer. Or maybe Joe and Ian have contracts elsewhere that allow them to do local team gigs on the side but no national deals, which MLS/Apple would be.

As for other incidental voices, NYCFC has a brief history. Most of our former players who have retired are from overseas. Who even is a potential hire?

Fusaro apparently did Spanish broadcasts for RB the last 2 years. I don't know if that was radio, internet radio, or TV. I'm guessing our internet radio guys will stay where they are and do the sync thing that MLS and Apple has promoted.

Rodney Wallace? He did an MLS game on FOX Deportes. but he was not that good, i think it was his legit debut on TV as an analyst.

I’d like to see Chris Wingert. He’s the kind of guy you build a broadcast team around.

WIngert was one of the few I thought of, not that I have any idea if he's interested or would be any good. Wallace is a possibility, but I don't see them hiring people without significantly more experience.

By the way, Wikipedia says Tolleson currently does soccer for ESPN and Joy does with CBS. I honestly don't know if those are accurate still, but if they are, it does possibly support my earlier theory that they might be precluded from taking on another non-local soccer job.

i think he is an agent now.
Was just making and old school NYCFC joke. (Aren’t those the best?) as I see you got with the laugh emojis. But I do appreciate the serious analysis.

I think there are two names that have been part of an MLS broadcast crew and are big omissions: JP Dellacamera and Ray Hudson.

I read in the Athletic that they passed on Dellacamera because he's older and they wanted to appeal to a younger audience. I can only assume the same of Hudson.

This seems really short sighted to me. Both are very good, have a ton of knowledge, are well recognized and make things exciting for the listener. It's an insult to the younger crowd that they'd care more about the grey in an announcer's hair than any of those factors.

agree on both. Add in Chris Whittingham from miami and our own Ian Joy that both should be on.

Ray is a legend and any young listener/viewer who doesn't appreciate his color commentary doesn't deserve to watch the sport!

I can't support any of these opinions with evidence but I think
  • if Ian wanted to be involved and was never invited or given an offer he would let that be known one way or another and solicit support
  • if he were currently in negotiations he would hint at that
  • if negotiations did occur but were brief because they lowballed him he would be a professional and say nothing but nice things and wish well to his colleagues
  • if he was personally uninterested in being involved the project or unable to participate due to other obligations and opportunities he would say nice things and wish well to his colleagues.

i think he probably didnt want to give up the CBS gig and Apple tv may not have let him do part time.
