MLS Cup Playoffs - November 2 - Cincinnati (Home)

good game.

glad we went out full attack and press, but boy did we look gassed at the end when cinci was putting on the pressure. ilenic and parks especially looked ready to fall over.

lucho going over in a heap then getting up and jogging around like nothing happened when he realized he didn't get a call - that's gotta be a yellow at some point no? it's pathetic.

good fight from the boys. hope cushing decides to go full attack, high press in cinci. go big or go home. we go there to play out of a defensive block again and it won't end well. GO TO WIN. smash them in their stadium.

So much diving from Acosta and the rest of the Cincy team. Embarrassing.

I don't know if our guys were gassed or if Cincy just pulled up the pressure when they were losing. It's a playoff game, and that's going to happen. Thought we did a really good job limiting their good chances even at the end, and when we did give up a big chance Freese was there.

ilenic and parks looked gassed to me. parks almost looked like he had lead feet. ilenic got beat on the dribble and could only muster a jog to recover. it's fine. we played hard from the start so getting gassed is expected. luckily freese and others were able to step in when we needed it.

also glad martins wasn't actually hurt hurt. was worried for a bit.

Amen. Right before FCC scored (great shot BTW) I was complaining to my wife that they needed to substitute because the team was dragging.

Whatever one thinks of Cushing, one trait he has maintained is a penchant for late (or no) substitutions. It’s clear he has trust issues with certain players, but at some point fresh legs matter. What has Wolf done the past month that he needs to stay on the pitch late over Bakrar or Fernandez? Those two may have issues, but they both will run.

Freese had a very interesting game. The first 15 minutes of the second half his passing was atrocious. Turnover after turnover that invited pressure. Of course he is always there to keep the pressure from turning into a goal, and his save towards the end was beyond fantastic.

The first 20’ we were very flat. Things didn’t pick up until after the first goal (BTW so much credit to Mitja For that cut back — great vision and poise). At the end of the first half it felt like the worst half we’ve ever played and still managed to go up a couple against a decent team. More often we play well but can’t finish. At halftime I felt like it was the opposite.

I thought starting Maxi and using Perea as a sub was the right call.

Haak may have had his best match ever. IMHO he should start over Risa now.

I still wish we would be more aggressive on free kicks in the central third. We always play back and while that’s tactically sound it’s also too predictable.

Great win, extra credit for not collapsing against a dogged opponent. Also a great atmosphere.

Having a No. 9 who can finish has completely changed how this team plays, and the potential this team has to make a run. Alonso is game-changing.

As for the atmosphere, I caught myself looking over at the construction side for our new stadium while walking around the stadium pregame. I can't wait for how good the atmosphere will be in a closed-off soccer specific stadium. If we can bring this kind of noise in a baseball stadium, we're going to have one of the best atmospheres in the league in 2027.

We could really use an outlet attacker to possess the ball and give the team a breather between the attacking waves when we get into situations like that. Magno was good at it but assuming he's not coming back we should get a backup-level target man type ST.

I give Sands POTM. He was everywhere.

Haak was really good. I agree with others who have said that.

A few players looked gassed. Parks was one (he had a good game). Santi was another. I wanted him to be subbed, but then he gets around the defender and draws the obvious penalty.

Does anyone think that penalty should have been a red? He was pulled down from behind - the defender wasn’t going for the ball - and this was just as he was preparing to shoot.

probably not a DOGSO situation because of the proximity to the other players/defenders around. kubo was right there as well. would be a very harsh dogso red, if it was given.

As others have said. Haak was very good last night and seems to be finding his feet as an MLS level centerback

I'm excited to see Haak excelling at CB. I think he's at the point in his development where they need to pick a primary position and keep him there. Given his level of play and consistent game-over-game improvement, I see no reason why he shouldn't be one of the starting CBs heading into next season.

That may be his role. He's listed as right footed, but it doesn't seem to matter much.

NYCFC leadership has consistently prioritized a left-footed center-back for the left-center-back (LCB) position. While Haak has been performing well on the left, if they remain committed to having a natural left-footer there—and given that much of the attacking roster seems focused on long-term development—perhaps it’s time to consider moving on from Martins. This would free up a Designated Player slot and allow for a season dedicated to developing a Haak-Risa partnership.

I thought this was going to be Jovan's job, or one of them. 🤷‍♂️

I think they thought that too. Turns out that poaching goals with Red Star, the Goliagth of the Serbian Super League, with a transfer market roster value of $78.6M against a bunch of bottom dweller David clubs with a total market value of $4M-$8M doesn't quite transfer for to a parity driven MLS that averages a clubs roster value around $30M.
