MLS Cup Playoffs - November 2 - Cincinnati (Home)

Regarding Gudi, I think he was just fine, and that was all that team needed.

ASA has Tinnerholm (3 times), Ronald Matarrita (3 times), Malte Amundsen (once), RJ Allen (twice), and Jeb Brovsky (once) as having a better goals added for a season than Gudi's best year (2021 - Malte in 2021 had a G+ of 0.79 compared to Gudi's 0.26 while Gudi played more minutes).

Gudi's FK against Atlanta is absolutely why we remember him much more fondly and I think completely overrate his performance while he was here (not saying he was bad, he just wasn't close to the top level this team has had).

He really produced next to nothing except for the Atlanta game and then the playoff stretch.

In total, he had 2 goals and 3 assists during his 2 seasons at NYCFC. 2 of those assists were in the playoffs (off the bench) and the one goal against Atlanta.

Yeah, the Atlanta goal and the smart play / assist to Talles against Philadelphia in 2021 ECF.

I tend to agree. He was really good at times and had a high ceiling. But he was prone to two things that kept him from working out - injuries and mistakes. He was out a whole bunch, and that foul against Toronto was just the last and most blatant of the stupid mistakes he'd make a couple times a year.
It was more than a couple of times a year. He just got bailed out a lot. He was a terrible defender off the ball. He let people in behind him constantly and he was NOT an inked in starter for much of his time here even when healthy. For long stretches he was sitting behind Ben Sweat because successive managers didn’t trust him. And then when he left for Cincinnati he was a mainstay in an historically bad defensive setup. This forum always overrated him because he occasionally looked good going forward. Reminds me of the old Moneyball “looks like a ballplayer” syndrome.

Mata was also horrific at managing his stamina and the bigger the game the faster he would run himself into the ground. Once his legs were dead the mistakes would start piling up.
