MLS Cup Playoffs - November 9 - Cincinnati (Away)

This game is, for me, going to decide whether this was a successful season or not. All year I've been of the belief that in order to be a truly successful season, the team needed to advance to the conference semifinals. Today the rubber hits the road.

Come on New York!

While I think it’s important to succeed and advance to the conference semifinals, I’m going to have to disagree with you on the idea that the season all hinges on this one game. Sounds like you’re putting a whole body of work on just one set of 90 minutes. If we are grading the whole season I’d give it a 76%. Just passing but really has a lot of work to do. I hope the product improves even just slightly next year from this Jekyll and Hyde season where we don’t know which NYC team will show up for each match. I’m happy we made the playoffs, but I don’t think I ever expected them to get past this first round at the end of Game 34.

My goal for this season was top-4 in the East and a first-round win. We got 6th, but so close to 4th that it's sort of incomplete there. I would be surprised if we won today because of our road struggles, but we are good enough to be a conference semifinalist. I will be disappointed in the overall result of the season if we lose today.

That's fair enough. Given the way we started the season, I'm happy with where we are. But I think we're good enough already to go deeper.

Next season, look out.

But I don't want to get ahead of myself. Let's win today.

one dimensional attack tonight, overly relying on direct balls to martinez. but we defended well and contained kubo and orellano.

ilenic stepped in and had a monster game. saved us for sure on one play and capped it off with a pen to win it.

we definitely need to get our attacking transition in order. but at this point, with the lack of depth in midfield/defense and lack of actual rotation in the attack, i'm thinking our guys are just gassed from the season and don't have the juice to transition as much as we'd like to see.

in any case, first playoff HRD ever and we're playing at home. we absolutely NEED to win!

Not the most entertaining 90 minutes, although we defended well and were the only team to put the ball in the net (stay onside, Alonso).

Penalties were maddening. Freese is the man. Was Maxi the last outfield player to not take a kick?

Looks like we'll have our game at Citi and a circus in the parking lot.

great game for Haak, including converting his sudden death penalty kick.
Not only did he bury that thing, but he was up for the gamesmanship. So was Mitja, by the way. He was grinning at Celentano before his PK, so you know the Cincy goalkeeper was chirping at him.

I'm feeling really, really good. We're building something special in Queens.
