MLS is Back Tournament - 2020

This whole idea is stuuuuuuuupiiiiiiidddd*

*unless you're a broadcast partner who would otherwise sue MLS for breach of contract

i mean we all know TV is driving all this, not just MLS. but if it does get cancelled ( which i still think they are far from that despite dallas pulling out)) MLS can say ...."hey we tried"

They’ll probably just move a team from our group to that group.

Pretty detailed look how the bubble and tournament is not being run with the correct safety protocols.

now this tournament is even more unbalanced. And how unfair is that to FCD that they don’t get to compete for a CCL spot? I’m all about playing. But not sure if a tournament is the way to go.
I don't know why, but I can see people on twitter (wrongly) doing a "they got sick, it's their fault" sort of deal.

I do agree, however, that if a team can't participate, there really shouldn't be a CCL spot on the line for the tournament. I can't say there is a better solution, though? I don't think "last year's teams get another shot" is fair either.

I think last years teams is very fair. They lost out on CCL this year. And whatever this year becomes it’s not a true season as we know it. It’s the simplest and fairest solution.

We all know if this happens there will be an outcry of "bUt WhAt AbOuT tHe TeAmS tHaT lOsT"

it’s like the internet crapping out with 1min left in FIFA and you’re down 2 goals. You get a lucky out. It happens.

They’re retweeting/sharing videos from player/staff personal accounts.
That's what I thought at first, but some of the tweets were first-hand (though I wasn't sure if they were cribbing content without attribution). I'm talking about all of the ones that begin with "from the bubble", e.g.:

My suspicion that it was a player/staff person inside the bubble is also what Sam Stejskal and Paul Tenorio are positing in the piece they just posted to the Athletic:

On Monday, sources said that Nashville SC has five players who have been confirmed as positive and three more presumed positive, pending confirmation. That news was first tweeted by the “MLS is Back Insider” account, which appears to be run by anonymous MLS players inside the bubble.

Also, in the latest Stejskal/Tenorio piece (‘There’s no perfect solution’: MLS confident in bubble, but concerns remain), a few highlights/takeaways, some of which have already been observed by folks here:
  • "All the positive tests appear to have been first picked up by teams in their own markets and not spread to other clubs in the bubble."
  • There's increased player anxiety in the bubble and a perception that this wouldn't be happening if it were another, higher-profile league. "As one player put it in a text to The Athletic on Sunday night, 'If this were happening in any other league, it’d be DOA.'"
  • One Nashville player tested positive on arrival, four more tested positive over the weekend.
  • The five teams who were not yet in the bubble — Colorado, LAFC, LA Galaxy, Toronto FC and the Vancouver Whitecaps — were all traveling to Orlando today.
  • "It should be noted that MLS’s initial plan for the Orlando tournament called for teams to arrive in Florida a full two weeks before their first matches [which] would’ve given the league plenty of time for an effective “airlock.” [...] The players, concerned about being away from their families for that long in the midst of a pandemic, balked at that length of time, however, so the MLS Players Association and the league negotiated a shorter format".
There' also discussion with an expert assessing the MLS protocols and what would or could be different based on her expertise. One part of the story I was not expecting was all of the false positives in testing. I've not followed that issue closely but I had assumed (wrongly?) that the chance of a false positive was pretty low, whereas a false negative might be more likely (see e.g., MIT Medical: FAQ: Testing for COVID-19).

Related: Garber has been doing the media rounds since Dallas exited (AP: FC Dallas withdraws from the MLS is Back tournament)
Garber vowed to stop the tournament if warranted.
“If there is a situation at any time that I believe that the protocols aren’t working, and the health and safety of our players is at risk, then I will make the decision to shut down the tournament,” Garber said. “That is something I committed to the players and to our entire league early on. But this is proving that our protocols worked and our plan so far has been sound.”
