MLS - July 9 - New England (Home)

I am in fact ready to give away my tickets for today. I'm not yet shaking this off and don't think I should go out, drive, etc.

Section 127B, Row 18, Seats 1-2. Should be in the shade.

Thanks. University of Michigan, like her big sister who just graduated from there, and both School of Engineering. And they also both went to the Bronx HS of Science which has the same nickname so we're getting 12 years of Wolverines. The older one is now living in Virginia.

omg my daughter is going into senior year at Cornell, also Engineering, and also went to Bronx Science! Maybe they were classmates!

Son going into 2nd year at RPI, computer engineering, after Brooklyn Tech. I have no idea how I ended up with two engineers.

Yeah your girl would have overlapped at BxSci with my older daughter for 3 years, and with my younger for one. My elder studied aeronautics/aerospace, and has a job in systems. Younger is planning Comp Sci/Electrical.

Engineers are the new free thinkers.

ETA: also we visited RPI when our older was considering. I was impressed with their placement record for graduates and the unusual requirement that you take a semester (or year?) off to intern during your time there.

Petrovich is one hell of a shot stopper. Revs found themselves quite the replacement for Turner.

Hope to see our boys playing with more urgency soon. Everything just seems to relaxed.

Thought we played a great game even with being up a man. Got to figure out our lapses in defense. I thought Santi was amazing today. He kept picking out the right pass, distributing wide into space and got us into dangerous areas. His shot was way off but he played the Maxi role well.

Yeah, we're still lacking that little bit of intensity, that directed sense of controlled urgency. We're closer. But still not quite at the level we were before the last international break. And we still haven't sorted out our defensive lapses (which might be related -- same root cause).

Good win though. Sitting second in the East with a game in hand and a healthy GD while not firing on all cylinders is pretty good.

So far this year NYCFC has taken 9 PKs and opponents have taken 0.

We're doing better than Atlanta did in 2018 when they were awarded 14 PKs and conceded only 7.

PS: Some whiny Rev fan in the game thread on Reddit said there's always a BS red card in Yankee Stadium to help NYCFC. I pointed out that this was the first RC to an NYCFC opponent all year, and last year we were given almost 2x as many as our opponents.

They're barking on Big Soccer too:

"Farrell shoving forward wouldn't result in Taty flopping onto his back."

"Taty sticks his arm into Farrell then falls down, draws 3rd PK and a red card. "

"Nice flop by Castellanos, though probably not enough to overturn . . . "

Oh well. We go up to Gilette first week in September. I vote we kick the ham and swiss out of 'em and be done with it, just to make a point.

Good to win again. Santi was great. Wish he and other had their finishing boots on. Thought all the PKs were clear. I was staring at all of them.

Linesman on homebase side was annoying as hell with his late flags even when the call was clear cut. Callens wasn't happy with him either.

Hope Martins is ok!

We just need to up the intensity in attack... maybe I should say, ruthlessness? Our finishing could be more clinical and a man up and without their best defender, we should have just pounded them into the ground. but a win is a win.

Really loved seeing Haak out there today, though he didn't really stand out, which means he kept it simple. Ok with that but hope he can get some courage with more minutes and show us what he can really do.

Talles also played great today and sucks Taty missed out on a hat trick. Top of the golden boot race though!

That first half was hilarious. 3 PKs? The first one was just atrocious. Did he not know he was in the box? Second one was a bit soft, and third one was soft but DOGSO, so it kinda had to be called.

The Pereira goal was outstanding. That guy has some pretty good skill. We just play such entertaining stuff. Gotta figure out the lack of urgency on the defensive end though.

Refereeing thoughts...
- Taty gets a silly yellow card for playing after a whistle on a handball on him is called. Carlos Gil kicks the ball away after a foul is called but doesn't pickup a yellow card. No consistency.
- First penalty, correct.
- Second penalty, nope.
- Third penalty, soft but nothing not clear and obvious.
- Missed handball on the box late in the first half after the DOGSO, I think.
- Bou looked offside on the second NE goal.

Wild one today.

No handball cause it came off his body/leg first. At least that was my impression watching it live.

2nd PK i thought was pretty clear. Happened right in front of me. On camera, looked a lot softer than it did watching it straight on from behind the goal. To me, looked like Kessler body checked him pretty hard in the back and made zero attempt for the ball. hence the PK. if they had collided while both going up for the header, i would have had no problem with that. taty jumped, kessler didn't. there's an angle from behind the goal in the highlights.

Bou looked offsides to me too but guess not enough to be overturned with our weird YS stadium camera angles.

I find it interesting this labeling penalties “soft” especially when it is clear a player is not playing the ball but the opponents body. admit that I watched this game on a phone but it seemed pretty clear that Kessler body checked Taty into Maxi on the second penalty.

My thoughts exactly on the 2nd PK. I kind of hate to see a game with so many PK’s but if defenders were playing the ball rather than body checking from behind…I think it would make the game better if that crap was reduced. I mean, are fans gonna complain if goal scoring went up a smidge?
There also seemed to be a pretty bad challenge late in the second half that the ref couldn’t find the cajones to award another PK for.

They seem to be quite bitter in RevolutionLand this evening.

For a second I thought he was owning up to Couva

I think Bou was behind the ball on the goal there. At first I thought it was a clear offsides, but after replays I'm not sure.

Refereeing was a mess today. Taty got the yellow for kicking the ball away, I'm almost positive. And of course that's his accumulation yellow. At least he'll be fresh for the Red Bulls. We take way too many silly unnecessary yellows. Really need to be more disciplined with those.

I'll be honest -- I know we had a shout for another PK or two. No team had ever gotten 3 PKs in a game before -- we got 3 in the first half. We weren't getting another one unless there was a decapitation on the field. I did think Taty flopped/sold/whatever you want to call it on the third one. He went down really easily. Yes he was pulled back, but he made the most of it, the ref bought it, and obviously that's not a clear and obvious mistake at that point.
