Sure, Adidas will have to pony up the cash but relationships matter even in multi-million dollar deals. Adidas will have to pay, but they could easily use NYCFC as a step in the door.
MCFC is owned by the CFG who also owns NYCFC. CFG will very much care about the NYCFC look and how it appeals to fans/sells. If Adidas doesn't do well, CFG will be less inclined to sign with them when the next MCFC kit deal comes around.

I'm watching a Seattle Sounders game and they're wearing the black and neon green kits. I had an idea to replace the neon green with the NYCFC sky blue and the sponsor. Is that something you'd be able to try in your free time?

Gday all, supporter from Australia, I follow/ member of Melbourne city fc back in Australia, just wondering if your jerseys will have etihad airways across the front to conform with man city and melb city as I understand your home top will be all sky blue. Also looking forward to purchasing one with David villa on the back.
Philadelphia Union used this as a third jersey last season and I absolutely loved it. It paid homage to Bethlehem Steel FC. For those that want a history lesson about the roots of US Soccer:

Maybe we could do a tribute to Bethlehem Steel's rivals who variously went by the names "New York Field Club" and "Yankees Field Club". Not sure if there is any record what crest they used though, and if they used the (MLB) Yankees crest then it would obviously be a no-go.

Do each team keep what they sale or the MLS share all the jersey sales equally between the teams?
The later happens in the NBA to prevent huge market teams, like LA or NY, of making way more money than teams like Charlotte
