NYCFC in the Media Thread - 2025

I don't have a problem with #12.
Bring in a kick ass 10 and we could rise.
On the other hand don't sleep on Austin, SJ, New England and I'll even toss in Chicago who all made some big moves during the off season. Of course whether or not any of those moves work out is another story...........

ETA: Upon further review who cares what Austin and SJ do? Factor out all the Western Conference clubs and that would put us at #7. Even if Chicago and NE improve we still make the playoffs; if only by default since the other teams in the East are pure garbage.

Last year NYC finished 6. Maybe someone ahead falters but no candidates at the moment. OK Columbus is weaker but probably still better than NYCFC.
Atlanta almost certainly jumped us, so 7.
RB was 3 points back and tied on GD. We've lost more talent than they have. Reasonable to think they climb past. 8
As you note Revs and Fire made big moves, but start from a position of crap. Neither, both, or just one could jump NYC. Kind of toss up level but leaning a bit positive. Still toss up and toss up.
Union had a better GD than us last year despite 13 fewer points. I think they lost some pieces. Toss up. Nashville had an oddly sub-par season last year and should revert at least somewhat, but haven't really helped themselves. Toss up. DC has made an effort this offseason, but also are coming from a place of crap, though not as bad as Revs or Chicago. Toss up.
IMO we need to improve, with better defense plus an extra 15 or so goals combined and above what they generated last year from Ojeda, Wolf, Jones, Fernandez and Bakrar. Otherwise there's a decent chance 2-3 of the 5 tossups jump over NYC. Even if 1-2 of the 5 teams ahead in 2024 drop, it's easy to see NYC below the line if it does not see improved play from existing players and/or a big new piece sooner than we expect.

Finishing 1-3 - where 80+% of MLS champs finish - seems unthinkable.

100% this. Making the playoffs is a pretty low bar, imo. Failing to make the playoffs just says your team is very, very bad.

My gut feeling is limping into the playoffs isn't very exciting cause the most likely result is a first round knock out. Sure, we get a couple more games to watch them play and maybe we become an underdog story, but all the odds are against us if we can't show that we are one of the best in the league throughout the season.

we overcame huge odds to win our cup in 2021 and that was with a team that was miles ahead of what we have now. it's hard to imagine getting anywhere near silverware with what we have right now.. but i hope to be pleasantly shocked, surprised, and humbled.

We are not in the top eschelon of the East. Fully agree. We are no better than 5th in the East, and that's if we make good moves this transfer window.

So, possibly, barely being 5th in the east based on a gamble that we'll have decent signings? Why are we lowering the bar ??

We are a big market team playing moneyball to linger mid-table. that's unacceptable. We need to be challenging for the top 1-3 spots in the east and top 5 in the league every season. that's what a big market team with deep pocket owners does.

I understand that teams go through cycles sometimes as players leave and/or retire. But how the roster has been managed since we won the cup has been ridiculous. As far as i'm concerned, Lee gets sacked by mid-season if we suck. He shouldn't get to choose who we sign in the summer window. he's made his gambles and if they don't pan out by summer, he needs to go.

I agree with that! I agree with all of that. It's not lowering the bar, it's where I believe we can finish. I agree that we should be where Cincy, Columbus, and Atlanta are. Cincy and Columbus are small market teams who have made shrewd signings.

This isn't a scenario where NYCFC isn't spending enough money -- we are spending money on the wrong players, which is why I agree that David Lee's seat is going to be very hot this year.

The warmth of his seat, though, is why I don't think he's going to stand pat. I do believe by May 1 we'll have a more complete roster ready to compete in MLS. If those signings don't pan out, Lee is in trouble. If they do pan out, I believe we can, potentially, be in the thick of it.

Lee has already authored the 2 worst post-expansion NYCFC PPG years ever. I give him something of a pass for 2023. It shouldn't have been as bad as it was but a pretty severe falloff was inevitable. But 2024 was still way below NYCFC's prior standard.

Because I am a fair and just man, I will acknowledge that 2016 was worse than both 2023 and 2024 when measured by xGD and xPts. That team benefitted from some magical finishing by Lampard, Jack and others, even Khiry and Mendoza (and 2023 had a reverse underperformance problem). Arguably the 3 worst years are 2015, 2016 and 2023, which somewhat takes 2024 and Lee off the hook.

But regardless, 2 years after the absolute low of 2015, 2017 NYCFC had a GD of 13, xGD 12.6, points at 57 and xPts at 55.21.
2025 is 2 years after the low of 2023 and it seems unlikely we match that performance. Hats off to Lee and Jansen if we do though.
