There is this really good young player named Sands that I want on this team .
I'm not condoning Sagna as a DP, but he'd execute the position exactly like PV wants it to be. However if we were to get a "special name" RB from Europe, Antonio Valencia would be a ridiculous get as he'd be about the best overlapping Wing Back that MLS would ever see. Currently has an $8M transfer value with one year left on his contract. At 31, Jose will likely be bringing somebody new in so he probably could be had next winter for very little before he could leave on a free later that summer.Working under the impression that we could make Maxi Moralez a TAM player, would people here be OK using a DP slot on a RB for the next 1.5 seasons? Both Zabaleta and Bacary Sagna are on frees this summer. I had no clue Sagna was 34.

Valencia would have to be part of a back 4. That's the whole point of their defense not knowing when Valencia is going to maraud forward. I'd be fine with Mata or without if he is transferred out, since Wallace could easily slide in to his spot (also freeing up the LW spot). Those two could be deadly alternating who advances with Chanot/Callens anchoring. And if Mata is transferred, his GAM could be how the deal gets done.Valencia is a great shout. Probably forces you to officially play 3 in the back though (we have the squad to do that thankfully).
I'm not a huge fan of a RB/LB/CB/GK Designated Player. But what's realistic and a fit this summer? Pirlo has a year left, then a CM position opens up. That allows you to go out and get Khedira the next summer or guys of that stature. A RB Designated Player, paired with Matarrita on the left, and our improved backline, fits right now. Lock yourself into a 18 month deal so that position frees up the same winter as Villa's extended contract ends.
I just don't see where you go and fit someone else in right now? They spent money on the Goalkeeper. They spent a lot of money to get Chanot and then brought in Callens. They spent a lot of money to bring in Ring and Maxi Moralez. Pirlo isn't being taken out of the line-up. You have Villa up top with Harrison. Maybe the left side could be shored up offensively, but then why bring in Wallace and pay up to get Lewis?
Full back is exactly the last place I would put a DP.
If Vieira can transition Iraola from RB to CDM, I'm sure he can find someone already on the squad to play the RB role, maybe Herrera.
Give the DP spot to someone who's more active in the game like Khedira or Torres.
I would totally endorse getting Zabaleta this summer. I spent many a fun couple of hours at Yankee Stadium last season wishing we had someone just like Zabaleta who'd bomb up the sidelines to overlap, get a late pass and do a one-touch into the box. And hey, he also plays defense too, no extra charge.Working under the impression that we could make Maxi Moralez a TAM player, would people here be OK using a DP slot on a RB for the next 1.5 seasons? Two ways:I don't get the 3 man back line talk. When we have done it, last year, it was by dropping the CDM 2 yards backwards in between the CBs. It wasn't a large change, and it weakened our back line. To those who advocate for it, who are you taking off for the 3rd CB, assuming you are not just dropping Herrera/Ring back?
Do you take off the CDM and play Pirlo in a two man midfield with the prior fullbacks as wide midfielders?
You take off a winger and play with only two forwards? Thereby negating the acquisitions of wallace, camargo, lewis and harrison?
I don't understand the obsession with adding another CB to this team. Everything Patrick Vieira has done has been to allow us to play the 433 (speedy wingers and strong MFs) 3 man backline is fundamentally different, and you would need way different players to play it. Its not FIFA, the players have to actually know how to play the different positions with different responsibilities. Its not just saying Matarrita, now you have no defensive responsibilities.
Two ways:
drop RJ and add another MF/F to the lineup
Or
Drop RJ for Chanot with Brillant taking Chanot's spot while letting Mata have more freedom forward.

Thats more like a constant state of emergency defending than a 3 man back line. Its such a one dimensional tactic. The point of attacking fullbacks it the opposition doesn't know which one will come forward. This all started last season when PV would play Hernandez at RB in place of RJ. We'd have a backline that was:
Mata - brilliant/Mena - Chanot - Hernandez
Hernandez would stay back and the whole line would slide over while Mata spend most of the match in an attacking position. PV didn't need to put Hernandez in there, but his constant use of him makes us think that's how he'd like to play. We'll see if he changes with all the added talent an options and his new "flexible" lineup.
