For sure there are numerous factors that go into NYCFC attendance. We've been focusing here on the Star Power vs. Winning debate, with a side of stadium issues mixed in. But as has been discussed previously, in the NY-metro area you also have a glut of sports teams, with fandom split in every sport, both of which which diminishes the power of civic pride to drive attendance like you see in cities with 1 team per sport and sometimes less. Add in that IMO NY soccer fans probably have a higher percentage of Europhiles who look down on MLS and it all adds up (or down).

This is the problem with non-laboratory research. We can't control the experiment. What if we had this same record with Zlatan? How much of an attendance bump would we have? What if we had this same team but were on the playoff bubble? How much attendance would we lose? What if we had Zlatan and were missing the playoffs? Would it wash? And what if any of these things happened in a SSS?
What we know is this. Stars boost attendance. Winning boosts attendance. SSS boosts attendance. How much for each of them? Who knows?
Further, I wonder how much a really good front office boosts attendance? How much impact do any of the following have:
- Building mini-pitches around the city
- 24 hour match at Rockefeller
- Player meet and greets
- Food discounts (or lack thereof) at stadium
- Face painting / fan zone
- Pro-inclusion initiatives like the no p*to chant halftime video
I can tell you the face painting better be rethought. My daughter and I got there Saturday right before halftime and they closed the line immediately after us. Lots of unhappy kids/parents got turned away during halftime and beginning of 2nd half. That was a seriously lame unforced error by the club’s brain trust.
There were empty seats because it was a blowout in the final minutes.
We are living in one side of an experiment so it's all good.
I cancelled my season tickets because the atmosphere stinks and there's no value in the tickets. That's a stadium issue.
I would have renewed and continued to deal with soccer in a baseball stadium had Zlatan been on the team.
So the stadium lost me, but a name would have kept me.
Doesn't change my support for the team, strictly speaking of the time and investment in season tickets.

so whats im getting here is that even if we somehow win MLS cup this year....you guys wont be happy because we dont have a star?
I don't think anyone is saying that. We're the hardcore fanbase. But the casuals won't be showing up even if we do. Also, it's very frustrating to see other teams signing big stars and we all assume Medina's DP spot is replaceable. So, if we have a championship roster, why not add a big name to bring butts in the seats and maybe help us win a bit more too. Also, could help us get over the hump to win CCL next year.
i was taking it to the extreme. i get medina frustration, but i wont be mad if we replace him with someone that is effective like heber even if its not a name. i mean atlanta didnt have a "big" name as neither did seattle and torono were local big names but not world known names.
i want a damn title even if its 11 home growns. we had three superstarts, people came and what did that leave us with in the end? nothing really, Villa got his MVP but we have yet to get close to a title. if they can make it work sure go ahead but it should not be a top priority since i think any teams are trying to make their team a winning team, even if the team is not world wide known name.
heck i recall beckham not wanting to play the CCL ( not sure if gerrard or cole did with galaxy either) so its not guarantee they will play in it too.

YOU would be fine with it, but would the people needed to fill this new stadium be fine with it? I don't know. I'm sure the casual fan brought to a game hardly comes back because the atmosphere isn't what it used to be. How many fans were lost because of the quality on the pitch vs the stadium. I'd say it's probably 50/50.
Like I said before. I didn't renew because we play in a baseball stadium with like 15k physical people there. I'd also rather not spend a few grand on something I can't even give away, let alone try and sell for $10. The stadium is probably the number 1 reason the attendance is dwindling. A big name player would only be a band aid until a stadium happens. That has to be a consideration for the club.
Money aside, would the known popular players even want to play here anymore?
If our roster could regularly draw 25-35k I would be thrilled with everything. Unfortunately, we seem to need a Lampard type player to draw those crowds.
The experience at Yankee stadium is pretty good when 25k or more are there. It gets very lame with our typical attendances over the last two years.
