NYCFC Players Wanted Thread

If the star players were that big of a draw for us, attendance would have leveled off with Lampard and Pirlo on the pitch.

It didn’t.
Pirlo was a shell of his former self and not the draw of his first year - it was depressing to see his play that last year so not sure he’d have been the same draw. Lampard drew big - just an anecdote, but I saw plenty more British ex-pats/tourists (ok, I heard them) there to see Lampard than I do now. There were always Chelsea and England jerseys. Now???

Same happens when Rooney is playing. Just the nature of it.

YOU would be fine with it, but would the people needed to fill this new stadium be fine with it? I don't know. I'm sure the casual fan brought to a game hardly comes back because the atmosphere isn't what it used to be. How many fans were lost because of the quality on the pitch vs the stadium. I'd say it's probably 50/50.

Like I said before. I didn't renew because we play in a baseball stadium with like 15k physical people there. I'd also rather not spend a few grand on something I can't even give away, let alone try and sell for $10. The stadium is probably the number 1 reason the attendance is dwindling. A big name player would only be a band aid until a stadium happens. That has to be a consideration for the club.

Money aside, would the known popular players even want to play here anymore?

nope, not with the refereeing this league provides.

I agree with you about Lampard's draw factor, and Pirlo's utility as a player, but not sure I agree about Pirlo not being a draw near the end. I don't think the people who come to see someone like Pirlo care that much if his play has diminished. They just want to see him. I suppose word spread he was a regular DNP and that had an effect, but I know I saw a lot non-NYCFC Pirlo jerseys at the Citi Field game because it was his last game. And I heard a number of chants and calls for him to play, which annoyed me because we really needed -- and got -- a result in that game (not that it helped come the playoffs).

I'm reluctantly coming around to thinking -- maybe more so in NYC than some other MLS cities -- that established stars from major Euro leagues matter for attendance. I could see it also being big in Miami.

i think someone else mentioned already that cause it's NYC, there is a large number of people who come from soccer loving nations. they're aware of good players and great players that the average american simply has no clue about. Let's be honest, if you asked a random american on the streets of NYC who Pirlo was, I bet they would have no idea. On the other hand, an immigrant from europe, latin america, africa, etc, would probably know. For that reason alone, a big name would draw attendance cause it's a chance for people to see a star in the flesh.

I think a winning team and a stadium matters more to the average american fan while having a big name is a bonus. but drawing in a crowd, a big name can't be underestimated, especially in a city as diverse and immigrant rich as NYC. We need attendance to make the atmosphere better and while it's not a end all say all, a big name would be a good temporary move to do so. A stadium announcement would also help but i wouldn't hold my breath on that.

Fair points. Pirlo’s last game has to be taken as an outlier - not simply for attendance numbers but it’s career significance - because as far as anybody knew it was possibly the absolute last game for him outside of tribute matches for him or ones he partakes in.

Trade both Mitri for Zlatan and Medina for either Cavanni or a Pastrami Sandwich, and YS would be near 25-30k every game. No question about the draw - everybody loves the audacity and scoring of Zlatan and even more people like a good kosher meat. Cavanni would help attendance too.

Anyone else pissed off about this?

This guy is elite. He’ll be elite for another 2 years. Especially with MLS players challenging him. You’d think CFG would try to get him to NYCFC if he’s showing even the slightest interest in going to MLS. Hell, one of his former coaches is here.
I’m pretty sure we all know why he won’t be coming here. We’re cheap. We’re not willing to spend money.

why would you be pissed? cause he's going from CFG to another team outside the umbrella? We don't exactly have a DP slot to offer him .. plus, who would you displace in our starting XI for him to play? If we don't have parks back next year, then i guess parks. but i don't think we had much to offer him at this point in time whereas miami has everything to give and more.

Miami is gonna be a hot destination along with LA.

I’d make some moves to fit him in the lineup. There’s been talks on here about Maxi leaving. Couldn’t think of a better person to fill those shoes.
Parks has personally stated he won’t comment on his future here.

I also remember seeing a lot of Juve and Italy kits at Yankee Stadium in the time he was with us. Both him and Lampard brought a lot of English and Italian tourists and people who have English and Italian roots. Definitely haven't seen any previous club kits a la Villa, Lampard, or Pirlo-esque as our DPs are now relatively unknown European players or an incredibly young Paraguayan. Not seeing the big name effect at all, and I think a big name could bump us anywhere from 2-4k per game.

I also traveled all the way to RBA two years ago to see the Chicago vs. RBNJ for Schweinsteiger's first match after signing with the Fire. There were a lot of Bayern and Germany kits throughout the arena and parking lots, and wouldn't be surprised if it was one of their most attended games of the season (aside from HRD). Will look that up now.

Villa, Lampard and Pirlo definitely had an impact on our attendance.
We’re running at maybe 1/3 the activity we had when those 3 were on the team together even tho we’re playing better football now.
The team is basically giving away tickets to prop up attendance.
The reason resale was so good in the first two years is because tourists or casual fans were willing to pay more money to sit in the first few rows and see them play up close.

Weather isn't everything. NYC is a draw. Fix the stadium and players will want to come here as much as LA or Miami which both have their own issues.
You know what Miami doesn’t have that NYC has and it’s a massive tiebreaker.....

State taxes, city taxes, and insane real estate taxes. Any $5/year DP will see big cha-Ching cha-Ching when comparing the two destinations.

I don't understand the "we're cheap" or "we're not willing to spend money" claim.

That will affect some. But LA has all those taxes and it's still a draw. As I said, each destination has pluses and minuses. I maintain, give us a SSS and we are competitive with both of those.
