You need to look at value at their salaries. Facey on $125,000 is incredible value. Sure, he was a mediocre CB. But he was more valuable than any other full-time starter on our roster, save for Saunders.
I think this highlights the difference between our league and, say, the Premier League, a difference I'm slowly coming to realize might explain a lot about MLS. A lot of people here are saying Facey wasn't the best CB, which is perhaps true. But in MLS that in a sense doesn't matter at all. Yes, Facey isn't Vincent Kompany, but he also doesn't cost millions per year. In the Premier League if you have enough money you can have every single player with millions-per-year salaries, but here you can't do that. So if Facey is 33% as good as Kompany (just a made up number) but he costs us only 10% of the salary, his value to us is greater than having the better player. He may not be as good, but he's taking up far less cap room and leaving us able to get more players. That's value for money, which is what MLS's crazy structure is about. (He would have an even higher value-for-money factor is he didn't take up an international spot.)
It only took me a whole season to look at the league in this way as I've been so used to the EPL and MLB where it's common to have multi-million dollar salaries. With either of those leagues there's no real limit to how much you can spend, more or less.
So Hi, this is MLS. Pirlo has huge value for money (VFM) for the team and the league. The reason is because he's world renowned and a huge draw. He gets people to buy tickets. Even if he's no longer the best player it doesn't really matter. He's high VFM.
Same with Facey but for a totally different reason. He's high VFM because he's good enough, can play his position, and doesn't cost us much against the cap. Again, high VFM.
What's interesting is thinking about Mix in this way. Pirlo's a DP so his salary doesn't count, in a sense. So the M part of VFM is low, even though he gets paid a lot. This is what makes his VFM so high. But what about Mix? He's not a DP, so we have to use allocation money to erase some of his salary, which means we can't use it for other things, and his M is also high, all of which reduces his VFM. So even though he's a (potentially) great player, he might not have a high enough VFM factor. Or maybe in two years he'll just have gotten so much better, or be playing in a system that suit his style and skills, that his VFM will skyrocket.
I think maybe I'm starting to get a handle on how the league works, at least in part.
