NYCFC Players Wanted Thread

My priorities would be to solidify through the middle, then worry about the outside guys. Keeper needs to be sorted first if it won't be Johansen. I would be fine with Johansen. I am very happy with our CBs
If Pirlo stays, I am OK with Iraola at the other spot. If Pirlo leaves, I would like to get a very solid CDM like Piglover.

Top priority for me is CM. If Pirlo stays, we need one, if Pirlo leaves we need two.

Villa is the best player in the league, and the whole game plan needs to be getting it to him at the top of the 18.

After that, RB and LW would come next. I'd keep Harrison at RW, he is really good there, and I didn't see anything that says he could be a CM. He plays very light defensively IMO.

With our "identity," I think we should be playing with 3/5 in the back. More passing options and should be easier to break the press that every team in the league will throw at us next year. That means we need extra defenders. It also means we need those extra defenders to be able to pass the ball. Gotta cut Mena, Hernandez, White loose and somehow pick up a 3rd starting quality CB. Then somehow also add a few developing guys as depth. We really need the academy to start cranking out the yutes.

How are we cutting 3 CBs when we get one free cut per season?

Sry just meant get rid of them generally somehow. Unprotect / trade / something. Defenders that can't pass are more than useless to us, they're a liability.

I like it. Put Schweinsteiger behind Pirlo and Harrison, add Daryl Horgan at one wing and use Khiry or Taylor on the other wing. Front 6 are locked in.

Gator for GM. I could get behind that front six. Or...pull a Toronto and do 3-5-2 with your 5 being Matarrita - Pirlo - Schweini - Harrison - RJ Allen (or if you want to dream, Afful). Now THAT I could get behind.

I don't think Khiry or Tony are starter or even first 18 quality in an MLS Cup challenging side. Not even close. Would look for another winger or maybe even a target man striker.

Wow, you went all Citizen Kane on me! I am honored!

The question will be whether we have the capacity to get someone good up front once we've acquired Horgan and Schweine. Maybe, given that some of the loaned players will be gone. If not, we could go target man striker, but that means Villa is on the left, and thus we don't need Horgan. I can go with that, but you still don't have anyone on the right.

I think we really need a target man type. I don't think it necessarily has to be a starter quality guy with Villa shifting left (though we could go that route), but even just someone who is serviceable in that role. It sure seems that Vieira fundamentally wants to play the ball out of the back, but a real problem this year was that we didn't really have an alternative. I think this was due to three things:

(1) A GK that couldn't really distribute -- presumably we'll be better in this area next year.

(2) No target man to play the ball to - Mullins should have been better at this in his limited playing time, but I think that situation was generally screwed up because he expected to be playing more and we didn't see the best of him in limited opportunities (starts against Chi and Tor, sub against SKC). Assuming we don't seek out a new starting caliber striker, getting a serviceable guy who has this skill set would be huge (no pun intended).

(3) One of the biggest problems with our MF was that lack of athleticism meant we were horrible on picking up second balls. I would love to see Opta data on this since I'm saying it solely based on the eye test, but I have to guess we'd fare very poorly.

I get the impression that, in order to play out of the back, you also have to be willing to play it up the M1 occasionally to keep your opponent honest. We don't have that player.

Why is it that Neymar can play as a LW but Villa can't? Pack the midfield with two defensive players and one offensive minded player. Play through the middle with a Pirlo/Iraola/Schweini midfield and a guy like Shelton to hold the ball up. Let Villa and Matarrita play overlap down the right side and use your Mix savings to get a RB that can complement Harrison.

Villa may not have the legs/not willing to play wing anymore

Maybe. But that's the point of the Neymar comparison. They pretty much play athletic fullbacks who can track back and two holding mids. They also have Gerard Pique, which helps.

That's 3 CDMs again. I say, if pirlo is coming back, which Glen crooks says he is, forget shweinsteiger. That's a wasted spot with pirlo there. Keep iraola as a caddy and get a CM.

Yeah, my sentence structure was ambiguous. I meant one target man / striker OR another winger. I actually don't know that much about Horgan, so don't know whether he's more of a traditional down-the-line winger or can play the inverted winger position.
