I don't mean to call you out specifically, but generally, I find it a little off that we collectively bitched about CFG caring so much about the marketing value of our DPs, and then when we bring in a relatively no-name creator, people express concerns that he's not marketable enough. They can't win.
If this is a loan, as NYCFCfan suggested may be the case, that could be a good arrangement.
MLS generally doesn't allow loans unless there is an option to buy. So, maybe we are bringing him on a non-DP salary for a year. If he stays healthy and performs at a high level, then we can decide whether to take him in as a DP. If not, then we reboot for 2018.

That's ok. My concern is that if you can get a guy like this for no acquisition cost on a $1 Million salary (and we're all just guessing here), then go out and get a guy that costs you a couple of bucks that isn't injury riddled.
Unless you were a Juve or Forza Italia fan, you probably didn't know who Giovinco was two years ago.
The question is whether you (not really directed to you personally, just throwing out for discussion) need 3 monster names? How about a Villa, Khedira and young DP with huge promise but not a house-hold name like an Almiron type? Or how about Lodeiro who you and I would know, but most casual fans wouldn't know as a sub for Uruguay or follow Boca Juniors (or the Piatti or Valeri examples Marito mentions)? None of those thirds are Villas or Pirlos, or even international stars (maybe Almiron with the potential). I'm ok with those examples of trios (though I don't rate Maxi as high as those thirds even if we pay 2-3 million for him). I would even take one big name (still performing, and a fit), shoot for a Gio not necessarily a huge household name with the second, and have a third young DP from down south with massive first tier potential.
I'm OK with all of that. Almiron was going to be a costly acquisition. It wasn't a free transfer. It showed commitment from Atlanta.
I don't NEED 3 monster names. I would like to go watch the monster names because this is, after all, about entertainment. My preference would be go out and get the best player available. If Maxi is the best DP available, then don't tell us that there are players that are calling to try and play here. That sets a bad precedent.
You can't look at what Seattle and Atlanta have been trying to do and tell me that Maxi Moralez is the best DP on the market.
I agree. He is exactly in the wheelhouse of a great MLS signing just below the threshold of DP money (using available means). Hopefully that's what he will be.
Hopefully all these dream DPs say they don't want to play here cause they are afraid of breaking an ankle on a baseball infield.
Honestly, 3 seems like enough. Also, the TAM program seems a better way forward for the league. The quality of our best players is generally fine, it's always been depth and middle of the roster that lags way behind Liga MX, for example.

Making DP spots tradeable would be a lot like the NBA's luxury tax, wouldn't it?

Hope so. That is a great idea. The league would definitely benefit from having 4 or 5 DPs per team.
Do both. Just don't raise the cap. No reason.
DP spots can't be traded, but teams only get 2 issued to them outright. They have to buy the third for $150k as of last year. The proceeds go to the teams who only have 2 or fewer DPs.
Whenever rules like this and the no charter flights crap come up I always wonder two things: What valuation do MLS franchises need to reach before the remaining super cheap early owners start selling out and how long will it take for the league to hit that value level.

If we really wanted to splash the cash and get a MLS 3.0 Knockout DP, why not try for Leandro Paredes. Probably not going to happen but we can dream.
It's unlikely to happen so long as their investments are appreciating, no matter how cheap they are, unless someone pays significantly for future growth.
I don't come down on these guys too hard, honestly. They sunk a lot of money into what most thought was a real gamble, and they continued to sink money into it when things were not looking nearly so positive. Without the "early cheap owners", we wouldn't have serious first division soccer. To me, they deserve to make their money.
I'd just hope for increased revenue streams that will cover larger budgets. Also, expansion fees will help a lot. I think all of the teams that submitted a bid will eventually get in (or get a club moved there). Very long term, I don't think they'll stop until we get to 40 (or 40 - the busted/moved franchises).
The league has clearly looked at how it wants to expand spending on players and has clearly come down on the side of higher spending on non-DP starters rather than having additional DPs. This is what TAM is all about, and the amount they are devoting to these positions is not small.
The DP rule is all about bringing in high profile players to grab the public's attention and attract new fans. It has done this very well, but once you get past 2-3 DPs, the effect is not as strong. TAM is taking the next step, which is improving the product all around the field. This can also help generate fans - namely, the Euro-focused soccer nuts who disdain MLS as inferior.

I brought him up some pages back. Roma is stacked at midfield. Leandro seems to be the one on the outs, but not due to the lack of talent. He'd be a perfect fit here. Unless he didn't want to play in America, we should be able to afford him. He's exactly the type of player that should be a DP for us.
Why not both? What's the argument against it? If you charge for another DP slot and make it tradable, all sorts of awesomeness is likely to ensue.
