It's one month short of the third anniversary of this.

Thiago the defensive option? I'm not sure I would have voted for him over Freese or Haak.

Martins best skill is chase down save the day type plays that tend to be spectacular and likely memorable to more casual fans. The same fans that likely don't notice his more subtle short comings like never winning headers, loosing track of runners, and getting bodied often by larger players.
I also have a completely unsubstantiated suspicion that Martins is a bit of a diva and the team caters to him. It's why he's captain and why he's often the defender included in the polls over more deserving defensive selections. If they are putting him in the poll to keep him happy I wouldn't put it past them to take some liberties with the vote counting as well.
