Nycfc V Toronto Postgame

By the way, those were two of the best team goal celebrations yet. Notwithstanding (or maybe somewhat because of) the roller coaster up until this point, there appears to be some great cameraderie amongst these guys. I especially liked the Pirlo pile-on Mullins after the second goal.

A brief comment about Toronto:

Is there a possibility -- Of course, there's a possibility -- that there's a battle for Alpha Dog on the Reds between Giovinco and Altidore? Given Jozy's production, there doesn't seem to be much of an issue. Vanney probably feels the same way. Could this be bubbling under the surface causing a split in the locker room?

Then we need to start working on getting you a meet and greet pass for the rest of the home games.

Following up on your brief summary of Kreis' press conference, did he give any particulars as to why a healthy Tommy Mac was left out of the 18 last night? I know his last two games weren't his best but it just seems odd to me that TMac would go from being a fairly productive starter to not dressing in just a few weeks time.

No real mention of why TMac wasn't on the 18. I'm assume he wasn't in the players best used for the game plan against Toronto,

A couple points...

If Ned could handle those passes it would have been 4-0.

Hopefully when the schedule comes out, they stop with the mid-day summer heat games. I know it's MLS's call, but I hate it as a fan and players do too.

I wish there was a way to keep Mullins in the center and let Villa play left. The only problem is we aren't equipped to play a 4-3-3 type formation. Although. Villa/Mullins/Shelton would be a sweet trident. Is it possible to play the same style 4-2-3-1 with Villa as a wide left attacking Mid, Lampard in the middle and Mix wide right? Mix did well there last night. Not great, but he was involved in enough plays defensively and offensively to continue. Poku can rotate into any of the 4 top positions.

Mullins
Villa/Lampard/Mix
Jacobson/Pirlo
Angelino/Facey/Hernadez/RJ

Other than the Kreis-Grabavoy-Wingert love triangle, I think he might have just been spreading his depth out over the 3 close games. If he doesn't start on Sat then it might be cause for concern, but look at Montreal - started 9 new players and sent a bunch home to rest up and prepare during this rapid fire week.

I want this to work too because those are the players, plus Poku, who you want on the field. I think the problem is that Villa isn't going to defend on the left side. The one thing that Grabavoy did do is help defend against Altidore, particularly the few times that Wingert got forward (and you'd need more of that if you have Angelino there since his best virtue is getting forward). I think last night showed that we can be semi-solid on defense with the right tactics and cover from the wings and a holding MF. For the future, though, if we get a solid defensive left back who doesn't need as much cover, this could be viable and good to watch.

For as much as I dislike RJ, I'll give him credit. He played his ass off last night and wasn't as classless as he has been. Maybe he got a fire lit under his ass, whatever it was - it worked.

Saunders was phenomenal. He really, really focused himself and came back from that Dallas debacle. Loved watching him.

Hopefully Shelton will come back into play regularly and keep up some of this momentum.

I believe it is also a result of our co-tenancy. At least a couple of the Saturday afternoon games were followed by Yankee home games on Tuesday. NYCFC and the Yankees have stated it takes 3 days to switch the field and I if we play Saturday night the grounds crew either has to start in the middle of the night or wait until Sunday morning. If we play at 2 the crew can start working just after 4pm Saturday.

Yup. That's dual occupancy for ya.

Yeah I know. That's why I put AJ on the left side. But he theoretically will have to cover too much ground to worry about covering Angelino. If Villa cried about doing it all by himself up top, I don't think asking him to defend will sit well with him either. Angelino is more of a LWB, possibly a LM/LW in the making to handle those duties. That doesn't matter I guess cause he'll be gone. Our defense will get a major facelift at LB. So maybe that's something to explore next year.

With all these guys starting the year together next year and a retooled defense, I am very optimistic about 2016.

Kreis' diamond mid-field looked very effective last night. During warm-ups they were doing 5-on-5 keep away drills and the midfielders kept the good passing going for nearly all of the game. Ned did a decent job of moving and passing but his first touch on scoring chances is the worst I've ever seen.

Kreis should be happy with the performance. It shows his system can produce some nice looking and winning football.

Please read this article.... Glenn Crooks is the best haha... The article is about Toronto's coach Vanney complaining about the dimensions of the field... but that isn't whats funny. (Side note Glenn makes some solid points before the following)

"Comfort on the ball requires technique and awareness. I’ve taken a meticulous look at MLS matches and have attempted to identify the players who scan the field to establish their defensive organization or look around to impart information for their first touch in the attack. Those players — Gio, Robbie Keane, Benny Feilhaber, Clint Dempsey, Javier Morales, Jacobson — are in the minority. When you combine that lack of awareness with limited technical skills, the result is a less than favorable product. Without ambiguity, I am depicting the elite level."

Oh noz! Guess Crooks never got the memo. ;)
This discussion leads to one of the compelling reasons why the cries to sack Kreis are foolish. He understands the league and employs a style that demands an ability to pass out of pressure. However, he has not had the personnel or regularity in the unit to demonstrate the capacity to escape these jams. Kreis has been responsible for a portion of that inconsistency with curious lineup choices. Nevertheless, he remains the correct manager to lead this club.

We also have 3 European stars with established fanbases. 7 pm is like 1 am in Rome I believe.

Toronto does not seem to be playing together - and Twellman commented on that in the game. That said, I don't know that it's necessarily a Jozy/Giovinco thing. Plus, Altidore's production has been fine. He's on 10 goals, and missed half the season between USMNT duty and his hamstring.
