Only thing I could see is that the Italian media are confused, and we have agreed to loan him back to them at the conclusion of our season. He could take off at least most of December and January, go over there and get a few minutes of game time, train some and be nearby for any Azurri camps. Afte Euros, he comes back over for our late season push, leads us to our second consecutive MLS cup, cries, then retires, whereupon he opens a beard care products / Italian wine boutique on N Moore Street and manages to avoid doing Subway commercials.
You have Pirlo helping us to two MLS cups then retiring. What you are missing is that he also leads our charge to next year's USOC and then delays his retirement 4 months so that he can finish off with a CCL title and an American treble.

Whether it was Kreis or someone on the staff that told the press they didn't want Pirlo and were overruled..my opinion is they should be fired. I don't want a little bitch as a head coach. This isn't RSL.

the way it is being reported is not accurate. Remember that they thought they had Xavi. That fell through. Then the entire braintrust went to the drawing board. Kreis drew upon his SA scouting network. He had someone or some people in mind. Then the Pirlo thing came out of nowhere. This wasn't expected 3-6 months ago. For transfer purposes, this happened relatively quickly. Pirlo coming here is probably a bigger move than Alexis Sanchez going to Arsenal last year. That transfer took a year!!! to complete. This happened in maybe 2 months??

So no, there is no dissent in the ranks.

I thought I heard it another way on Sirius. Maybe I did. But what I thought I heard was Kreis was scouting a forward and out of nowhere Pirlo is presented to him on a silver platter by CFG, but he didn't embrace it. That his first choice was a forward. Which tbh, I agree that a forward was top priority, but things change and he needs to adapt. He could battle and disagree all he wants, don't make it public. This organization is very quiet on things with the media. So now it's all going to be about the 2nd guessing of CFG and Kreis in the media now. It's already started. Maybe it was an innocent thing, but don't give these savages anything to go after the new evil empire about.

Could have been stated any number of ways. Nets boy may have asked the source, "Didn't you want someone younger?"

Source: "well yeah, Jason and Claudio had been trying to go that route. Soriano saw this opportunity and made the call to bring in Pirlo."

Nets boy spins it for clicks in the way he reports it, stirs controversy and gets all the impotent soccer writers at half-mast to go after big bad City.

I listened to Sirius today and they did a hatchet job

I will have to disagree here. I'm a first generation Italian-American, and I can tell you that my family is going nuts over this, even the folks who are just casual fans of Serie A teams. This is a big deal for us. For one of the greats to come play here is huge, and many of them have expressed that they're going to start following NYCFC if he signs.

I'm 3rd generation Italian and my dad never watched a soccer game. I have always had Italy as my backup international team and even though I'm a Roma fan i am so excited by this.

I'm also a 3rd generation Italian and I follow the Italian NT and Napoli very closely. I love Pirlo and I love this signing if it does happen. I have a lot of friends that are 1st and 2nd generation and they are now all on board with NYCFC if we get Pirlo so I definitely think this brings in new fans

I'm a first generation Italian-American as well. It's in my blood, my dad was a big Lazio supporter, I'm a big Juve supporter, so seeing Pirlo come here would be great for me. I have a lot of family on Long Island and CT and they all know who Pirlo is, but don't follow MLS. When I mentioned Pirlo possibly coming here they were all like, we should go to some games. I think his arrival will open up the league to new fans.

Patrick Vieira, a coach at Man City, spoke to ESPNFC about the [potential] Pirlo transfer, saying:

"If NYCFC manages to sign a player like Pirlo, it would be fantastic because we're talking about a player who is one of the greatest of the last 20 years... He's won the Champions League, he's won the World Cup. He played on the biggest teams in Italy. He would be a fantastic example I think and a good professional, he's a good person. I think we have to just wait and see what's going to happen."

Vieria went on to say that Kreis could well ask for further loanees from Man City, as the Shay Facey situation seems to be working well and there's confidence about Angelino.

The fact is, none of us know if this will work. Lampard could be shot. he didn't play a ton this year and maybe MP knew what he was doing with him. He is probably going to have to change positions to come here.

Pirlo might not fit in with the VERY physical American game. Look what was done to Giovinco, an infinitely more explosive player. he's just played 11 straight months of football.

Are these better options than what an RSL or FC Dallas does with their DP slots? I happen to think so, but no one has tried a blueprint like this in MLS before.

Personally, I think Lampard transitions well to a CAM or RM in a diamond. He still looks like he has the legs and never lost the football intelligence. His best asset is finding the ball and we could use more of that. Pirlo, despite his age, gets around the field like a Michael Bradley does. You don't think he's moving that much but he's in constant motion. He will have Villa, Lampard, Mix and Shelton to run onto balls. All guys who have shown a really good ability now in MLS/EPL to make a smart run.

I'm not too worried with Lampard fitting in. Even at his age he still has enough talent and stamina for this league and will certainly be an improvement wherever he's slotted in. While I am excited at the prospect of Pirlo I think the physicality of MLS will take its toll initially, it's a much different style of play than Serie A. With that said, he's a professional and a legend so I'm sure he'd give us a couple of solid seasons. Additionally, his experience will only strengthen the team's mentality.

P.S - Before Patrick Viera was just a coach for Man City he was part of some of the most successful Arsenal teams to date including the Invincibles.

Every time you look at the player positions heat maps from the games, all our midfielders are jumbled up in no discernable shape. I don't think Kreis really gives a shit about the specific midfield positions (except CDM). he lets the players drift to where they are comfortable. Grabavoy is Kreis' disciple and he is the perfect case, he shows up all over the field to fall down and throw his hands up while standing still. I think we will all obsess over where everyone will be played, but the truth is they will have the freedom to go where they want.

Mix Lampard and Pirlo will all play midfield. Defense in this system comes from the back 4 plus CDM, and super wide play, ie white paint on the boots, comes from the full backs. The center will rotate and if they all get comfortable with each other its going to be frigging beautiful.

For the visual learners:

--------------Saunders------------
-----Facey-------------Hernandez---
Iraola-------------------------Calle----
---------------Jacobson---------------
-----Pirlo-------Mix------Lampard---
----MIx ----Pirlo-------Lampard----
---Lampard----Mix------Pirlo------
----Mix------Lampard----Pirlo----
------Mullins-------Villa-----------

I'm had no idea that a player like Pirlo would have such an appeal to an entire market of brand new fans!

I just hope that the new fans stick around long after Pirlo is gone. (Assuming he signs for us)

Some will, some won't. It's just how some fans are now Red Bulls fans because Thierry Henry was there. Some won't watch anymore, some still will. Same with Beckham. Regardless, it grows the fanbase.
