Lampard, Xavi and Villa would make an excellent attacking/ball-retention trio. A very good DM then would become vital. I'm not aware of anyone in the City academy that could do that but it would be a great challenge to intice a youth player's advisors. Looking forward to this team coming together over the year.

BTW I hope and suspect that personalities will be as critical in selection as technical skills. It'll be important that senior players are willing to guide and younger players prepared to learn and there are no partiers looking to just live if up in the big apple. I always prefer players to come for the money than for the nightlife .... my argument when people threw out that Man City were getting mercenaries in the past.

If Xavi and Lampard join Villa at NYCFC then not only will there be no other chance of signing a high quality world class player (DP) but that will also leave NYC with only 5 non-American slots left on a roster with 26 open spots.

Former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard, 36, will play for Manchester City's A-League side Melbourne City in Australia next season, ahead of his move to Major League Soccer franchise club New York City. Daily Mirror (external)

Hopefully the deal with Lamp would be a short one and Xavis would be 3 years so maybe in a year or two Lamp would go and we can get another DP to join Villa and Xavi on what might be their last seasons.

We'll see what happens. I can understand the trepidation but let's have some faith in Kreis, Reyna, Sariano, and Begiristain. I am sure they have a strategy in mind and will execute well.

While I agree that I would much rather have Xavi and then a younger, more energetic box-to-box midfielder but having him and Lampard will still be a formidable duo paired with a decent defensive midfielder (and nothing says they will play together all the time).

If Xavi doesn't accept then we should definitely shoot for a USMNT player. Hoping Xavi joins I would like to see some USMNT members play as non-dp...

I hear ya, especially if we want to get some man city loans. But we can always buy some extra slots off need be. Having Lamps is growing on me I guess. He did have a pretty good season last season.

You can insist that Americans are in the squad, what kind of Racist competition is this. I mean as few as 8 foreigners with 18 Nationals, you would never be allowed this kind of racism in Europe ;)

Former Argentina international Pablo Aimar, who is currently a free agent, is a reported target for New York City FC. Liam Bekker (@BekkersBlog)

That's a name haven't heard in years. He's 34.

Watched him quite a bit quite a long time ago as I live in and support Zaragoza. But honestly haven't seen much of him since he left for Benfica (and I think he transferred from there recently, as well, though not sure where he went).

He was very good in attack for Zaragoza and his subsequent transfer helped with our persistent cash flow issues. I imagine his powers have waned as of late and he would not be a DP signing if he comes.

Still, this one strikes me as odd if it is legitimate as there are better, younger prospects in South America.

Aimar used to be amazing! But has been injured on and off the past 2 seasons.

I don't see it happening, unless its like when juninho played for nyrb and he signs for a non dp.
