Prefer the balance myself (unless it was something as stunning as Balotelli) there's plenty of good strikers out there who can score goals without essentially being DPs. As for Gilardino it seems there's two main possibilities (according to the EOS website and perhaps others) the other being the Chinese league. That would offer him the chance to play under his former coach Lippi who coaches a successful outfit there.

Aside from that who in their right mind (especially in the West) would choose China over New York even if the former offered more money? Not to mention what happened with the Drogba deal. Martinez has not had a bad record at all with his stories and apparently his family would lean in the New York direction (presumably they are sane)

Despite kinks in our plans, we got more links than a chain // in the blink of an eye we are the kings in the game!

Shola Ameobi of Newcastle fame
http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/sydney-new-york-city-fc-7220790

I'm just posting these so we can discuss a bit. Doesn't mean I believe in the rumor.
Can the uk boys shed a light on the sites that are reliable? Or would that take the fun out of it?

A busy summer looms for Shola Ameobi, as it has been revealed that the Newcastle striker is a target for Australian club Sydney FC and the Aussie club have made their first transfer move for the striker.

With confirmation only hours ago that he is the plane to Brazil as part of the Nigeria squad, there could be more sunshine ahead if Shola decides to head down under.

The Australian club have confirmed that they’ve made contact with Ameobi’s agent to sound out the possibility of a transfer to the southern hemisphere.

Shola’s contract at Newcastle ends on June 30 and so by the later stages of the World Cup he will be able to put pen to paper for any new club.

Newcastle of course play Sydney FC on July 22 in New Zealand, only nine days after the World Cup final, so there is the possibility of the two Ameobis facing each other.

Or King Zlatan :D

i just saw that Ibra would be open to coming to MLS after his contract is finished. He would destroy the MLS. He can make great touches in the mid and then appear in the box for a strike. I hope he would chose us.
We need a mid 20 yr old midfielder/defender who will be our captain for years to come. Sort of the face for franchise. I would like someone like a Bradley who plays that position and will play for the jersey every game and stay with us for years to come. That should definitely be the next major signing IMO. After that a GK

I agree. Throw out a name...

NYCFC can do much better than Shola Ameobi. Would be disappointed if he signed, I like him but as I said, there will be much better options out there.

I think they should go for a proven goalscorer. Miroslav Klose last year said he would like to end his career in the MLS and he would be a great signing. Drogba as well but he is a lot more unlikely to join the MLS right now.

Drogba is being linked to Seattle.

Has anyone seen him play yet in these send-off series games? He looks incredible. Guy's 36 years old

Despite the amount of running these guys do it doesn't take a tool on their bodies like most US sports. Plus with stars like him the clubs do everything possible to help with recovery and to extend their careers. It's not uncommon for a player to last to his mid 30's nowadays

yea, but he looks like the best player on the field still. That's just wild for a guy his age.

Absolutely, the guy has extended his prime by 4 years doesn't look like he's letting up. Besides Mancini being a genius, look at his arrival at Galatasaray during the champions league a year ago. Immediate impact

I don't know if he could still play for a Chelsea/Barca/Bayern level side but the fact that he showed up in Turkey and turned it on this year - guy can still play. Would be incredible to watch here in MLS.

Maybe this makes me nouveau but I can never get sick of watching a pure goal scorer

Drogba just got this incredible never die attitude, he can pull his whole team and force goals in. Gotta admire him!

No doubt that Drogba can still play. He was very good in Turkey and he'd be great in MLS. I saw him play last year in the UCL quarterfinals 1st leg against Real Madrid in the Bernabeu... Ramos & Co. shut him down in that match but he scored the winning goal in the 2nd leg back in Istanbul (RM still advanced on aggregate). That's against a top club in an elite competition. It'll be interesting to see how he does in this summer's World Cup in the sweltering heat of Brazil.

I'm in the camp who say you need some balance. Drogba is a class act striker (although I think he needs some stabilisers as it seems even a rogue gust of wind can throw him off his feet) but having already signed one top DP striker, surely what NYCFC now needs for its two remaining DPs are a midfielder and a defender?

I agree, though, as some others have said, perhaps DP would not be necessary for the defenders.

Still, you may be able to get some great defensive talent with higher wage offers. And in the style and formation you will play, it is incredibly important to have a strong back four. I think you do need a Kompany type (obviously not the same level of quality but generally his leadership, temperament, decision-making, and strength).

I wouldn't be too surprised if we are linked to a Ferdinand rumor sometime in the future.

Gilardino or Ameobi would be fine, but Gilardino would also cost a transfer fee and no way NYCFC pays the transfer fee and uses its DP slot on a player when they can get equal value from free agents.

How reliable is this guy?
I don't want Rio.
Thoughts?

I can't comment on that account's reliability, but I can say Ferdinand is well past it, has serious back problems, and has a "focus elsewhere" mentality these days. I'd rather not have him, and not just because he formerly played for United, as I would be happy to see Vidic at NYCFC if that were possible (he's never been the greatest pure defender in my mind, and was allowed to get away with quite a lot in a red shirt, but I think he would do a good job in the MLS).

I would look elsewhere.
