I think its pretty safe to say moving forward we will have 2 DP slots to fill at the least.
Not so fast. If there is a 4th one created I will be surprised. I am pretty sure the Players Union will be fighting for higher caps and higher minimum then creating more DP slots for mostly foreign players. Now if a Canada/US DP slot is created, I can see the Players Union getting behind that.

I really don't think the player union will care about the DP slot that much as long as the minimum pay is increased. That will be addressed in all likelihood by a pretty substantial increase in the salary cap to upwards of 4 million i would guess. Taylor Twellman is usually pretty accurate on this kind of stuff, and when asked on twitter if there is a possibility of 5 DP's his response was it will NOT be 3 DP's.

The Players Union only exists to help current MLS players, who are by far a American majority. They are not the ones benefiting from the DP situation. Yes, Landon, Dempsey and Bradley are but they are a very small minority of both overall DPs or the average USA player. The PA will fight for higher caps and higher mins on salaries. Will they fight for more foreign super-stars (or not) to get paid more? I don't think so. Will they stop a 4th DP if it helps USA, no I don't think so.

i think the owners want a 4th DP slot though at the least. Really, a 4th DP slot won't negatively effect the current MLS players much at all. I think the Player Union's #1 and easily biggest priority is increase the minimum and maximum salaries. The owners can do that and are likely willing to do that, adding another DP slot really doesn't negatively effect the current players other than increasing the quality of play in MLS.

Twellman states the number of DPs will "not be 3" next year. Looks like we'll be able to sign 2+ big names yet. Nice.

Mix, so we have an American, and a foreign playmaking #10 please.
Twellman's word has basically become gospel at this point with how accurate he's been lately with US soccer news. So I would assume now that we'll have at least two spots open in 2015.

Steven Gerrard's Liverpool future could be decided within the next FOUR weeks
Talismanic skipper can sign for an overseas side in January and is believed to be considering his options after talks on a new Anfield contract stalled

It's Stevie in row G: Gerrard was a substitute in Saturday's win over Stoke
Steven Gerrard's future at Liverpool is in the balance just four weeks before he becomes eligible to sign for a foreign club, writes Steve Bates in the Sunday People.

The 34-year-old Kop skipper has been considering the offer of a new contract, believed to be for substantially less than his current £170,000 a week, for a few weeks.

But it remains unsigned and sources close to Gerrard suggest he might be thinking the unthinkable – finishing his playing days away from Anfield.

Gerrard can sign a pre-contract with any overseas club on January 1. But it is thought the Reds will not improve their offer even though it might force out the former England star.

The midfielder, who marked 16 "sensational" years at the club by sitting on the subs' bench for the first 75 minutes of Liverpool's 1-0 win over Stoke on Saturday, seems unsure whether staying on is the right move.

That has alerted a host of potential suitors around the world – with Manchester City and their sister club, MLS new boys New York City, already closely watching developments.

It is believed Gerrard has been disturbed recently by a series of behind-the-scenes events, which has led to a cooling of his relationship with boss Brendan Rodgers. The failure to strengthen the squad sufficiently to be genuine Premier League contenders after the £75million departure of Luis Suarez to Barcelona is a key factor.

But those close to Gerrard think he was taken aback by the financial implications of the new contract, especially as he is still seen as the figurehead when it comes to servicing Liverpool’s headline commercial sponsors.

Having turned down offers to join Chelsea, Gerrard is mulling over whether to commit himself to Liverpool for the rest of his playing days.

The club’s current form, the prospect of a pay cut, the deep-lying role he fills and his disappointment at not playing at Real Madrid in the Champions League clash earlier this month mean he is taking his time over a decision.

There is still a chance of more talks but so far there has been no formal response to the offer and the longer it stays unsigned, the more likely it seems that Gerrard’s days at the club are numbered.

Rodgers admitted he “felt bad” for benching Gerrard on the 16th anniversary of his first-team debut.

“I wasn’t aware it was 16 years until I walked into the dressing room and saw the programme,” he said. “He didn’t tell me. Steven’s at a stage in his career when he won’t play every minute of every game.”

There is no doubt the cap is going up. Its been going up 5-10% every year for 5 years now. But we will probably see it jump more. Not crazy, like double, but maybe 25%, TT said 40-50%, which is mind-blowing.

As for more DPs, not so sure. Maybe the make them take up more or less cap space. I like the American/Canuck DP idea. 4 DPs, and 3 are "free" sounds reasonable.

Getting off topic, but the DP rules seem so convoluted. Instead of going to 4+ DP's, just make the 4 highest players on each team's payroll not count against the cap. Keep the limit on number of foreign players regardless of salary. And done.

I wouldn't be that disappointed if they made a 4th American/Canadian only DP, but I am really hoping for just a 4th DP slot... Maybe its because NYCFC has a lot of money to spend and the smaller clubs feel differently, but I think the league can manage a cap raise + a normal 4th DP slot, and it would add a lot of quality to the league imo.

So do we have any good idea on who we are likely to get on loan from Man City? Donyoh seems likely, but who are the other (likely) three?
