Optimal Formation & Starting Lineup

With players coming, going, injured, and two new lineups in the mix, what and who would make the ideal formation and starting 11?

I'm thinking:
Saunders
Mattarita, Hernandez, Mena, White
Poku, Bravo, Pirlo, Mcnamara
Shelton, Villa

You realize Patrick Vieira has already decided that the 4-3-3 (that can morph in to a 3-4-3) is the optimal formation, right? Or have you not paid any attention to the team's preseason & first game prior to your post?

Congratulations for the most catty post of the weekend (at least, until my post-match review of Brillant on Sunday). Kind of a dick move to respond to a newbie like that.

Complain much? I actually answered his question as to the formation, as opposed to your obnoxious use of an adverb to describe my response. There's already an entire thread discussing formation and players. Starting a new thread that's redundant to another, and can also conveniently be answered by the other, is the same as asking a question that can easily be answered with a Google search. It's just plain laziness. If a newbie took the time to register in order to post, then they also should've taken the time to read some of the previous threads.

Missing a similar thread in another forum is one thing, but chiding a newbie for not doing his homework gives the wrong impression imo. I get that we want informed posts, from first-timers and regulars alike, but I just think there's a nicer way to encourage it than asking "Did you even WATCH the ING Academy stream against HB Koge?"

Also, "catty" isn't an adverb.... ;)

Describing my post as a "dick move" is an adverb.

And I said "paid attention" not "watch." Now you're really putting words in my mouth. Plenty of write ups on this site, MLS, and the web that describe the formation used during preseason - and they've all talked at length about the 433. So paying any attention to the preseason would be easy without getting the web feed from IMG.

Welcome to the site. You should check out the formation thread. If you ignore the antics of a couple people this is quite a welcoming and nice community.

Given PV's 4-3-3 the only change I would make is to slide White inside to CB and start Iraola for now (if he can go).

You guys are a serious lot :) My post was more about having some hypothetical (ideal) fun. Vieira is going to play what he knows, which is 4-3-3, and I don't think anything that's discussed here is going to change that, though it is amusing to imagine PV scouring the forums for tactical advice.

Now, if I was supposed to comment elsewhere in the forum, then that's my fault, but if you try browsing or searching for threads on "formations," the site's taxonomy & navigation aren't particularly helpful.

OK, so to please the formation gods (hahahahaha), I will now give my 3-4-3 formation (as I don't think sticking Pirlo by himself in the middle works):

Col Saunders
White - Mena - Mattarita
Poku - Pirlo - Bravo - TommyMac
Villa - Mullins - Shelton

Let's the flames continue!!!

Mix is still out of your lineup!

LionNYC Love your passion for Mix! We're spoilt for choice when it comes to the midfield, and I think he said it himself, he doesn't like to play on the outside.

Exactly it's Pirlo, Mix, and TMac right now in a triangle midfield with Mix center and Pirlo playing the 6. If we need more defense we sub out TMac for Bravo who would play next to Pirlo and still maintain a triangle put with Mix centered and up front and Bravo and Pirlo behind him. When Lamps comes back he probably replaces TMac.

I think the odds of seeing Lamps playing today is about 15%, but I do think they want him in the 18.

After the formations and selections we endured last year, we are all touchy about these types of threads. Tonight I will be happy with anything that doesn't include Hernandez
