Bruce Arena would like to disagree.
Isn't all of that Reyna's job?
Less perfunctory notes:
- If I'm Reyna I'm working my network. I think he's safe for another year but at best that looks like a dead end job. I doubt he has much say over anything right now.
- A bit of a surprise only because it seemed Vieira didn't want this job. As he seemed to have other options I hope and presume this means those reports were wrong. The alternative is he was offered something else -- eg being heir designate to Pellegrini -- as an inducement. Which is slightly troubling if it's the case but not necessarily catastrophic. Especially since if he was given that assurance I expect it was conditional on him succeeding. Even them, if I were Vieira I wouldn't count on anything even if he was given that promise and if he succeeds because I think if CFG sees something shiny and wants it they go get it even if it means breaking a promise.
- Developing talent and managing pros have overlapping but different skill sets. Some coaches are great at both; others excel at only one. Wait, see, and hope.
I saw a lot of Moyes to NYCFC rumors on Twitter, so it must've been true.
Until Kreis comes out and refutes that he didn't have final say on all players (as he stated MANY times), then he *owns* the crap roster we currently have. You only get one chance to craft a team with all of the Monopoly Allocation $$ that an expansion team gets, and Kreis burned through it like a bum burning newspapers in a garbage can.
Rather have Vieira!

I don't get the fuss about people not liking him, but hey to each their own. I have faith in our coach, can't wait for what this season brings
But the issue is if this hire meant to groom MCFC future manager or right the ship at NYCFC? I think there can be a balance but I would be very unhappy if Vieira doesn't finish out his contract and is beaming up to the mothership early.

I'm highly dubious of Reyna's function in this club. And it scares me to no end that CFG is trusting Reyna and failed former Union technical director with helping Vierra with the MLS roster rules and team building.
But with that said, Kreis is gone, we have to move on. I am excited about Vierra, even if it's from a FIFA 16 fanboy perspective. I imagine he will rip up parts of this team and try to get a new starting 11 together and hopefully play a little bit like Vierra used to play like.

LA were awful at first because of short sighed decisions like we are making now. They were one of the worst teams in the league despite spending stupid amounts of money on their DP's.
What made them the powerhouse today came down to smart decisions. They drafted both Omar Gonzalez and AJ Delagarza who helped transform their back line into the one of the best in the league. As well as bringing in other very smart acquisitions such as Todd Dunivant and a very good Donovan Ricketts.
The reason why Bruce did so well, and has always done so well, is because he's very good at building teams within MLS restrictions. Sure DP money helps. But it has been the core of LA that has made them what they are. It's why after Landon and Beckham left they were still a very strong team.
Salary cap rules and roster restrictions are deceptively complicated. As other noted, NFL and NBA teams have people whose only job is to work the cap in assistance to the coach and GM who manage and acquire the players. But one of the shortcuts is to basically keep banging at the edge of the rules, push them as far as they go, maintain good relations with the league officials, and work with the league to make things right. That's what LAG does and I think CFG has noted that.
Not really - the absolute best DPs will command a transfer fee, and the transfer fee has to be paid out of allocation money. You've got a very limited amount of it and so far, we've mostly used it for trading and for buying down contracts.
To be fair, no where that Vieira has coached has he dealt with transfers. As a youth and EDS manager, he has coached the players that he was given.
In most cases yes, but if Messi wanted to play for NYCFC and only NYCFC, and he had a $100M transfer fee, and CFC decided it was a good move, MLS would bend over backwards to allow it to happen - allocation $$ be damned. They'd do it in a heartbeat for him or any other major signing that would help the reputation of the league.

Actually if you are signing a DP then his transfer fee and his wage is wrapped in his total cost, which the DP slot accommodates for. Look at LA, spent something like $7 million on Dos Santos's transfer fee from Villareal and their paying him ~$5 million a year, but his DP hit on the cap still ~$450,000. Transfer fee doesn't change any of that.

Well folks believe it or not I have been thinking about this for a few days since I knew Viera will be the guy taking over. And I have to be honest, now that it is official, I am pretty excited. I think first and foremost this will garner the respect of Villa and Lampard, and perhaps Pirlo if he stays with NYCFC next year. On top of that, there is no question that this guy knows soccer in and out. I think the young players we have will respond to him without question. I don't think guys like Midas and his gang can ever say Patrick Vieria doesn't know soccer or has no clue if we have a bad season again. The guy knows soccer and I just hope he presses the right buttons and is able to deal with a locker room of such diversity in terms of talent and personalities.
I am pretty excited believe or not and really looking forward to the offseason and seeing how this team plays in 2016. The good news is that this is a 3 year contract so we know for sure he will be here for at least 3 years.
