Soccer Vs Other Sports In America

Does anybody think it is possible that MLS could be one of the top 3 major sports leagues in America in the next 10 years? Or at least pass a few other sports in relevance?

Baseball is on the way down (seen as the old generations gane)

Football is only played in winter/fall

Hockey is losing momentum because of geography and weather.

Soccer is a norm now. Its cool to watch the USMNT. Its seen as a youthful sport.

The only way this league is going to overpower other ones is when those younger fans grow up with a larger affinity for their MLS team, the league and the sport in general. Theirs too much history and love for other sports in this country before that gets taken over. MLS is a small speck on the national sports scene at the moment and it's taken the league 20 years to get to that point. They've done a great job so far but it's a long way out. I also think these ridiculous salary cap restrictions need to be amended before MLS is able to attract the top world talent that will bring some of the potential fans on the fence in.

And what does football only being part of the season have to do with anything? A few College football games I've been too (just a few, I'm not a fan) had more attendance than any soccer game I've been to.

I really hope so. Football (Soccer) is the best sport evarrrr. Baseball and American Gridiron Football are so boring to me.

It all depends on what the MLS does. If it tries to strangle itself with stupid rules, regulations, restricting teams and salary caps that prevent the talent pool from expanding then yes its growth will be slow.

I can easily see us overtaking hockey in a decade or so. Depends on what kind of tv contract we can get and other necessary reforms in the league.

Baseball is definitely in a decline though to what extent is up for debate. Football is going to have huge problems in the future with health and legal concerns, especially so for all college sports.

Immigration, a more connected world, time, and new talent are all on our side as factors that will promote the growth of the sport.

No one expected what Football would become or ever overcome Baseball. It happened. Never say never.

I'm not a optimistic about soccer's chances as @Gavin23 is, but he definitely set out the most likely path if it is going to happen.
1. The NFL and college football are both destroyed by the concussion issue. and
2. Soccer overtakes the NHL.

I wouldn't be surprised by #2, but there's so much money in both pro and college football that I expect they will figure out a way to keep going.

And at some level I don't care. I'm less concerned about relative positioning than that MLS grows and improves. If other sports leagues also grow enough to stay ahead, so be it.

I don't know. I want to say yes but its hard to say.

MLS has the problem that, even in 10 years, MLS won't be able to pay more than the top clubs in Europe meaning the top clubs in Europe will still be pulling our best players away from us. I think that's definitely a major problem compared to all our other leagues. All our other leagues feature the best players in the world.

The world changes faster than it ever has before. Due to soaring connectivity, over the next generation we are likely to see the rise of a global culture.

American football's downfall will be that it is a local game, with the aforementioned health issues the spark. There will probably be a similar move away from hockey. Basketball and baseball might do okay because they have an international reach. I believe these games caught on partially because they're cheap - with the US middle class suffering, especially relative to other nations, we might be the next one's seeking cheap entertainment.

Soccer will take over the world, with the United States included. It's just going to take another generation. (~25 years)
