In your estimation, do you think CFG goes cheap with the stadium, or actually will build something special?
"Money is not an issue"

I asked him point blank on this at the Chalk Talk, "Is there a budget for this project or we will spend whatever it takes?" He said it's a once in a lifetime project with a once in a lifetime budget but they will sensible and economical with what they do.

Don't quote me on that, I can't remember word for word.

I'm getting pretty tired of this. We've been hearing the same thing for the last 6-8 months. "Positive Discussions" is a bullshit way of saying they have nothing to show.

This will be my last year if we don't hear an announcement too. I could simply just buy tickets on StubHub for 50% off.

Patricof said it will be the crown jewel of MLS stadiums.

Time to start catching up to ATL UTD

What amenities will make us the crown jewel of MLS Stadiums?

Grass field, heated field, heated seats, safe standing supporter section, tifo pulleys, wifi, retractable roof, Statue of Liberty sized statue of David Villa, etc.

Fantastic question

“Both teams have submitted their proposals to the Empire State Development Corp, which is expected to choose a winner within months.”

ESDC is the government entity that has purchased half the chop shops in Willets Point. They must realize without a sports complex in Willets West they cannot develop the land they purchased in Willets Point (or at least not find an private entity willing to do so). All of this is way too interrelated.

I know some of the land in Willets has been ruled as parkland. Do we know that we don't have to deal with that issue?

Forget Willets West. There will be no Willets West. That's parkland. The stadium will be in Willets Point. They will have to do a fuckload of contamination clean up and engineering work but that's where it will be, and it will be a cathedral to soccer in the epicenter of the NYC soccer universe.

I think there is confusion here. Willets West is allowed by law to be used for a sporting complex, and although considered “parkland” is really a parking lot. It was planned to become a mall that would subsidize the Willets Point revitalization into affordable housing (why ESDC started purchasing land in WP in the first place), this was to be privately funded by Wilpons/Sterling (Mets owners) & Related. Then court ruled they can’t build a mall because when Shea Stadium was built (and parkland originally granted) it was written it can only be used for a sporting complex. So ESDC, Wilpons/Sterling, Related need a partner who would build a stadium in Willets West (NYCFC or Isles). Isles only want Belmont to be closer to LI fan base. NYCFC want WW to be closer to NYC fan base. Local politicians stump for NYCFC to move to WW before elections, knowing this will revitalize the area. Then it gets weird.

ESDC holds a bidding process for Belmont (yes same orginization that was working with Wilpons & Related on WW/WP project. And if you check city records still owns around half of WP and can’t do anything with it.) Wilpons & Islanders make a joint bid. NYCFC & Related make a joint bid. Both partners in the WP revitalization partnered with a different sports team on the ESDC bid for Belmont. The 3rd private bidder drops out because they believe the whole thing is fixed (hmm..). Word came out before presentations that Isles only wanted Belmont and NYCFC was exploring 2 other options as well (assumed to be WW & GAL).

If the Isles win the Belmont bid, ESDC can make a push in Albany for NYCFC to get WW, as they would be the last Major sports team in NYC looking for a location, and last chance for ESDC to do something with the millions in taxpayer funded real estate purchases in WP. If NYCFC is gets the green light for WW, 99.99% chance Related and Wilpons are involved in the WP housing project they arleady have plans for.

How could there possibly be any confusion about all of that? ;)

No the stadium will be built on the current parking lot of Citifield since that is NOT parkland so you won't need approval to build a stadium. The willets point are will be built with additional parking, shopping , housing whatever else they decide. Hopefully it will happen but knowing who things work in NYC who knows.

Slight correction - a plain reading of the statute wouldn't allow a second stadium on WW either. It allows for a stadium (singular) and ancillary structures, e.g. a parking lot. That's why we need to campaign Albany for it.
