League wide hit rate on u22 is very low. LAFC's Cristian Olivera is the only one in the league top 30 in g+. If they do hit, you usually are not going to be able to keep them, so these aren't really spots that you should depend on for production. Anything you get out of those spots is just gravy. The real value they have for roster building is when we do sell them, the allocation dollars we are able to generate can be used to sign vets in the above max budget charge range to non-DP contracts.

The real villain here is that there is no reason in the year of our lord 2024 that we need an expansion draft. just give each expansion team a shit load of GAM and call it a day.

Other U22 players may not be leading the league in stats but most teams picked ones that are at least good enough to play, unlike ours some of whom looked like they didn't even belong at the NYCFC II level when they got chances during the open cup. I agree with you on the expansion draft though, the league should be past this by now, its bush league at this point to have an expansion draft.

Also wonder if the deal to make here is Haak+GAM for the San Diego not picking O'Toole

Maybe I'm overly attached to our young guys but I'd be really bummed to see either of those guys go. Haak looks like he's just starting to come into his own at the CB spot.

I'd be bummed to see Haak go, but I think he's replaceable. Certainly more replaceable, considering the salary, than O'Toole.

Yeah, it would also soften the blow a bit if it meant Haak slotted in for SD as a starter, he deserves a shot to be a starter next season, with us or elsewhere.

Jury is still out on that one. How much Ojeda and Fernandez not getting minutes was on Cushing still an open question.

Agreed , I would rather see Risa go than Haak.

Risa is too injury prone and inconsistent
Those are the very reasons we can leave Birk unprotected.

It's a mind-reading game, and a little roulette. We can only guess what San Diego's board looks like. But if I'm their F/O, I'm not giving up one of my five picks for Risa unless I decide I really, really need an experienced left-footed center back.

Looks like we rolled the dice a little. Martins, Risa and Tanasijevic are all on the list. The rest I expected, except for Jovan.

So, we find out at 10:30 p.m. tomorrow night. But mgarbowski may be right. They could grab Jovan, flip him for a quick buck and then use the money elsewhere.

Just finished my first full season as a STH and following MLS. This will be my first expansion draft. Is it something we can watch/follow live? Or just check MLS later on for the news?

It's going to be live on San Diego's website in almost exactly 24 hours, at 10:30 p.m. ET tomorrow. Here's the site:

Just as the other guys said. But I will let you know it is a bit of a nothing burger unless you’re a SD fan and you're trying to wildly speculate about your roster.

Thanks everyone. Moments like this are exactly why I come to this page multiple times a day.

The players usually picked in these expansion drafts are fringe roster pieces, or pieces that can be used in a trade. We lost Ismael Tajouri-Shradi in an expansion draft after winning MLS Cup in 2021, that's the best player we've lost.

I think the most likely players picked off our roster are Tanasijevic or Tomas Romero, the 3rd-string goalie. As was said, it's usually a nothingburger. Only five players out of 29 MLS teams are getting picked.
