Player Ratings:

GK Josh Saunders: 4.0

A very shaky performance again this week from one of our most consistently reliable players last season. Kicking was poor and should have done much better for the Giovinco goal.

D Jason Hernandez: 5.5

Not directly at fault for either goal but must share some of the blame for what was overall a pretty poor team defensive performance.

D Frederic Brilliant: 5.0

Improved slightly from his performance last weekend but still does not look comfortable. Had a couple shaky moments and was arguably at fault for the second goal.

D Ronald Matarrita 7.0

By far the best defensive performer for NYCFC yesterday. Demonstrated some very composed and well timed challenges, looked comfortable in possession, and looked good going forward as well.

M Federico Bravo 5.5

Bravo mostly looked like a very good addition to the side yesterday by sitting back and providing cover for Pirlo and stopping counter attacking moves but gets docked for his terrible marking on the set piece goal we conceded.

M Andrea Pirlo 7.0

A solid performance from the Maestro in which he was constantly involved in the attacking buildup, hit some excellent long passes, put in some good defensive work and crucially provided a tremendous delivery on the set piece for our second goal.

M Tommy McNamara 6.5

A quite game mostly from McNamara but still a good performance with his usual work rate. Also must get due credit for winning the penalty.

M Mix Diskerud 7.0

One of Mix’s best games for NYCFC. He was constantly causing problems for Toronto’s back line and was involved in the buildup for both the penalty and the second goal.

F Tony Taylor 6.0

Slightly pedestrian performance from Taylor. Didn’t get many chances on the ball but looked willing to run and work for the team.

F Khiry Shelton 6.5

Seems to be improving rapidly as a player and growing in confidence under Vieira. Looked willing to run at the defense and committed defenders very well. Did well tracking back also to stop Toronto counter attacking moves. Missed a good chance in the first half though.

F David Villa 7.5

As is often the case, was by far our best player yesterday with his two well taken goals.

F Steven Mendoza 6.5

Looked very bright and aggressive as soon as he came on. Unfortunately was not given enough time to seriously impact the game.

M Mikey Lopez 5.0

Looked shaky in his short time on the field. Missed an absolutely great chance to get the winner but headed wide from very close.

Manager: Patrick Vieira 6.5

The 3-6-1 formation seemed to work well for us. We looked the better team for most of the game and probably should have won. The addition of Bravo was mostly a positive one and I will give Vieria credit for that. Overall not a bad point against a pretty good Toronto team.

Subbing McNamara with Lopez it's a clear sign Poku is not wanted in the team. Sad.
I asked him at the City Send-Off "when are we seeing you back Poku?" He responded with an Ehh attitude "not my call buddy". He did not look like the Poku from last year.

Think you were standing right next to me when he said this (at the City Send-Off?). I thought he said something like "No comment" too.

Some non-game interesting things to note:

- Since there's no baseball, they cut the grass exceptionally well for a soccer field.
- There were NYCFC flags around Yankee Stadium's flagpoles on the roof. I didn't see (or at least notice) this last year.
- There weren't many Toronto fans but the new away supporters section really drowns out their chanting. Orlando packed the away supporter's section last year. A Friday night match may not see them come out in full force but it will be interesting to keep track of.
- Since NYCFC switched benches, they're walking out on the other side from the tunnel, further away from me :(
- NYPD/FDNY have different scarves this season for the Tunnel of Honor. They also play a different sound (like an alarm) as they walk out, rather than the MLS anthem for the refs/flags/players.
- Clock still doesn't tick above 45' and 90'.
- The "Welcome to the Club" banner with fan names is no longer there. The NYCFC graffiti banner is no longer there.
- Inside the locker room areas/hallways they have put up NYCFC banners. Some in particular were the black and white with subway mosaic writing similar to the images posted at the end of last season, these looked really nice, at least on Snapchat. There's also a blue NYCFC banner right at the tunnel.

- Overheard security estimate 24,000 for this match outside before gates opened.
- Also saw Andy and Leah from Viewfrom226 Viewfrom226 on the field before the match but I forgot your names and thus didn't say hello. Next time, I'll remember.
- And the biggest question of the offseason: Why did Josh Saunders grow hair? His daughter wanted him to.
- Assistant coaches got the players who were taking a lot of time signing autographs and taking photos back into the locker room quickly. Never saw this last year, Vieira is running a well oiled operation.
- Back in the New York Groove was played. This will probably be our tie/loss song replacing Native New Yorker by Odyssey. Levels by Avicii was our win song last year.

Overall, the club learned a lot from last year. Doing better this year, but still has a lot of room to grow.

*Stiven as well.

And no worries, was just giving you a hard time. Welcome!
Can anyone confirm the pronunciation on the first name of our favorite new Colombian winger? It is the name as the common American name Steven? Working on my preview and I generally try to get these right (though no need to call out places where I haven't!).

Two more notes:
  • When we got home my 11-year old daughter, after eating a whole burger and half an order of bacon cheese fries, explained to her mom that she was hungry because our new seats are great but there were no cup holders, so it was more work to drink her lemonade.
  • Midas Mulligan Midas Mulligan was a gentleman who bit off a few curses I could tell in the presence of my 11-year old, and has my permission to let 1 or 2 fly every now and then, just not too much.;)
I actually think it could be an interesting experiment not to let Midas Mulligan Midas Mulligan engage in any color commentary for 2 games straight - he'd have so much pent up angst that would make it to the boards once he got home. Cathartic for you and your daughter during the game and entertaining for the rest of us not in the Batters Eye seats.

I think it's a sign Vieira knew the flow of the game was going against us and he put in a defensive midfielder rather than an attacking one. Ballouchy in the 18 instead of Poku is the troubling thought.
Yeah, at that point he didn't want to lose the point at home.

Don't underestimate his self-control. Last year he was off the boards a few days and we won; he didn't return until things tuned again, although he once messaged me to post something in the shoutbox on his behalf.
Also I'm going solo on Friday so he can let it all out.

They never do. Not sure if it's a rule or just a custom but that's why you hear people whistling like crazy for the ref to blow the final whistle when there's still minutes left to go.

I was just watching highlights of the match and I love the way the fans in the stadium have picked up on the: "The New York City FC goal scored by number seven, David.......VILLA!" Sounds really good on the tube.

I want the Villa chant from Fifa 16!

We need to do better at converting on goal scoring opportunities. Khiry and Mikey missed clear goals. Mendoza had a decent chance in the final stages of the game.

Our last game of the season should be our best game.
How about Pirlo's sublime pass to Villa that went for naught? There may not be a better lifted pass all year in the league - dropped it over the defender perfectly.

Boo. Hiss. If I didn't exclaim my frustrations to the heavens during the matches, I wouldn't have time for anything but posting.
