USMNT Talk

Probably not the best to have TNT be the broadcast partner and play your game on the same night as the NCAA Tournament. Though I realize that's not USMNT's fault.

And for the crowd ... when you charge $200 for every game, this is what you get. Their extortion of American sports fans causes stadiums to be nowhere near full for national games.

Perpetuating soccer as a rich person's sport in this country. Until that stops it'll never be part of American culture and will never be seen as a top American sport. And of course MLS and the usmnt will never reach the heights they claim is coming every 10 years.

Tickets to see Lionel Messi at Yankee Stadium last year were retailing for $200, even in the upper deck. They sold out and made their money, but the prices are insane. I'd enjoy going to a US national team game when Etihad Park opens, but I'm not paying those prices to do so.

It feels like 2023 NYCFC:

It’s not the coach. It’s the roster.
Still waiting for a scorer to step up and be consistent for this team.

I think Poch totally bottled this one. Panama sat in a low block, and he had attackers on the wings and elsewhere who were not well suited to breaking down a low block. Musah and Weah aren't going to dribble anyone in the final third.

The US has good players but this generation is not exceptional.

US Soccer (fans, many pundits, the organization itself) have Dunning-Kruger for sure.

also - why would poch put turner in goal? the guy hasn't been good since he left the revs because he hasn't played! Either of the other two would have been a better choice. Best choice would have been to call an audible and bring in Freese at the last minute :D

the lineup still bothers me. why is musah a right back? why is mckennie a winger? They seemed to be floating all over the place anyway, but that probably added to our problems. We need strong players at their natural positions.

Yeah, Poch says that players have to be playing minutes to play the USMNT, hence by Gio Reyna is on the bench. But he starts Turner in goal who has only made 4 appearances in 2024/25 for...can you tell me off the top of your head what club the USMNT starting keeper plays for?

Going to Europe has been a death sentence for USMNT keeper since 2017. Gabriel Slonina went to Chelsea, he's 20. Will he ever start for the USMNT in a cup competition?

Rich or privileged. Jack McGlynn came on last night as a sub. Is he the 12th or 13th best player in the US? Or is he the son of the guy who ran the club that was the only US Soccer-approved academy in the NYC region for years, including when he was a child?

i tuned in for about 10 mins. we didn't seem to have much flow. no cohesiveness. no grit. it's like we played expecting panama to just roll over and let us win. it was embarrassing for a team that has the "big stars".
Poch was pissed. But credit to Tyler Adams for stepping up and taking the responsibility on behalf of the players. They know they screwed up. Maybe even half-assed it.

This is the other side of the coin. And I'm not sure why Gio didn't come into this one at 75', or even 60'. McGlynn was an odd choice.

Canada 1-1 USA at the half in the consolation match. Better from our guys today: more energy, more effort. But still not good enough. If this is what we bring against the Big Boys in the World Cup, we're going to get creamed.

More USMNT players should be in MLS, including Gio Reyna (just not in Austin or NYCFC). More playing time. More connection to their country. More connection between MLS and US Soccer. The obsession with playing in Europe has damaged development of the sport in the US, on both the playing side and the fan side.

I think the playing time would be the most important. There's no doubt these guys have a lot of talent, but if they aren't playing that talent stagnates. They don't have to come back to MLS, but they need to understand and accept their level and play for a lower table side or a lower league side. Some of them are at that point. Some are not.

But I think the biggest failing this time is from Poch. US Soccer went out and got a big name coach. We have zero high pressure world cup qualifier games. Instead, we have nations league, friendlies, and gold cup. So far, Poch talks a big game, but when it comes to putting a team together, he doesn't practice what he preaches and his lineup decisions are questionable.

If things don't change, we're gonna crash out of the gold cup too or barely make it into a 3rd place game again. The world cup will be beyond embarrassing if we don't see some plan and progress soon.

We're going to get smoked if we keep up like this.

And not for nothing, but as I mentioned on Facebook, this current generation looked its best in the brief time B. J. Callaghan was the head coach. They played with passion, played loose, ran like thoroughbreds and looked like they were having fun.

It's that last part which has me so worried. We just looked ... dour out there. Not quite disinterested, although I'd accept it if someone were to make that argument. We just looked miserable.

As much as I would love to see Gio Reyna in an NYCFC jersey (and Joe Scally as well), this is not the way.

American players need to be playing against the best competition in the world if the USMNT is ever going to compete seriously at a world cup.

The experience they'll gain fighting for playing time and respect over in Europe will pay dividends in time.

American players need to play, period. Guys stagnating and not playing at European teams won't improve them and won't get them ready for the World Cup. If guys aren't getting playing time, they need to go to a club where they can get minutes.
