USMNT Talk

It's true, the US has no #1 keeper. Totally a toss up between several guys right now. Some of whom are currently injured.

So different from earlier eras, when top-tier keepers were pretty much all we had.

keepers are expected to so much more now though. i think we still have good shot stoppers. we need our keepers to command the box a bit more. but playing with feet is where they make most of their mistakes, which just wasn't expected of the earlier era keepers who would just boot everything that came their way.

but even judging based on modern criteria, we don't have a standout #1. total toss-up and whoever poch seems to like for however he wants to play. who knows... that guy could be our ice man.

I'm still behind our guy. VOTE FREESE.

FWIW I listened to the Futbol Americas pod and the consensus (including Kasey Keller) was that even setting aside last night’s error, Freese isn’t and never was a serious contender for the US #1.
If Freese isn't a candidate for #1 keeper, I don't know who is. Turner's been our #1 for years, and he's in camp and behind Freese. The usual 2nd to Turner is Horvath, and he wasn't called in.

Maybe Poch rates Steffan or Schulte more highly, but they aren't here, and Freese is the one with the chance to prove himself.

ETA: Poch has apparently been publicly supportive of Freese after Sunday's match.

Also, Steffen is currently dealing with a knee injury, but has also been extremely up-and-down. Like a historically bad season last year and a ridiculously good this year, so who knows.

If Turner actually completes his rumored move to Lyon and starts I'd imagine he'll be number one come next summer.
Lyon just got relegated via some sort of regulatory decision.

Apparently it has to do with debt or overspending or not paying transfer fees, or a combination of the above.
Not sure we can count on Turner going there now.
