USMNT Talk

Not that I've seen it used on this board, but I hope no one ever calls Morris "Stanford Messi" again. The guy has no left foot at all and he is not creative at all. He is big and strong and he likes to run behind defenses. We should call him "Stanford Chicharito"
Chichadios is an absolutely amazing player. (3 consecutive Bundesliga player of the month awards and a boatload of goals that stacks him up in the top 3 of the league in scoring is pretty great!) We shouldn't be comparing him to the likes of Jordan Morris. (Who has yet to play a competitive professional match)

I still can't believe morris turned down Weder Bremen for Sounders. No disrespect to Sounders or the rest of MLS, but how is Morris going to get any better playing against subpar defending in MLS? Are the Sounders gonna start him over Dempsy or Martins? Is he even guaranteed playing time with them?

You are right. We should not compare him to a great player like Chicharito. We should just call him Jordan Morris.

I mean, there are similarities to their playing styles. I don't see a problem with a popular, successful analog to describe the attributes of a little known player.

Obviously, we all know he hasn't yet accomplished as much a Little Pea.

The reason he stays in Seattle is because they are going to play him. He can get a good 2-3 years of solid game experience and then move. Beats staying on the bench or getting relegated to the developmental team in Germany.
You are selling him short. How do you know he cannot fight his way onto the team in Germany. Kids got skills

in hindsight yes its great...because obafemi is gone...he WILL get minutes. prior to that who knows how many minutes he would of gotten. problem is that now there will be high expectations due to the hype and big contract he got.

however, in germany youth players do get minutes, granted not as many as starters but they do get minutes generally speaking. he may have been in Werder bremen II for a few games to get used to the euro game but could of gotten minutes in first team.

I've been giving some thought on how we can improve the midfield, which is perhaps the biggest weak point of the team right now. I think the best option is to move Fabian Johnson and Geoff Cameron into the midfield and rely on other players to hold down the back.

We need a new center mid to partner with Michael Bradley as Jones and Beckerman age. Cameron has been starting there for Stoke the past couple of months (prior to his injury). Having Geoff in mid would give cover to Bradley as he moves forward. Cameron will only be 31 at the time of the next World Cup.

Similarly, Fabian Johnson plays primarily at LM for Borussia Mönchengladbach, and he's been killing it there lately. We don't have anyone else established enough at that position to justify moving Fabian back to defense.

So, if those two move up, who plays in back? Johnson has been used at RB, but with Yedlin getting good time in England, it seems time to let him lock down that position. Cameron has been used in the middle, but we have John Brooks who can team with someone like Gonzalez, Besler, Alvarado or whomever else is in good form - also Miazga in another year or so. That leaves LB, which is always a question, but there are several serviceable candidates in Ream, Beasley or Villafana - maybe even Lichaj. The best argument for playing Johnson in back might be at LB, but I still think better to have him in midfield.

Starting lineup...

[Dempsey] - [Altidore/Johannsson/Morris]
[F. Johnson] - [Bradley] - [Cameron] - [Bedoya]
[Villafana/Ream/Beasley] - [Brooks] - [Gonzalez/Besler] - [Yedlin]
[Howard/Guzan]

I don't know. Too many Americans go overseas with all the hype and then sit on the bench and rust away. The kid is just out of his junior year of college. Seattle was always going to play him - there was no doubt about that. Germany was never certain. Spending a couple of years paired up with (and learning from) Dempsey will be great for him, and certainly doesn't foreclose going to Germany later.

I love how people seem convinced he would get good playing time in the Bundesliga but think Seattle wasn't going to put him on the field.

depends on the fee MLS wants for him. especially if he does well here.

He already wasted many of his developing years dicking around in college soccer. He's has the most raw talent of any forward I've seen for the US. But with this choice and staying in the NCAA you can see he doesn't have the mental aspect to be great.

That's about as ridiculous a statement as I've read on these boards.

I disagree. I think it's pretty widely accepted that one of the big advantages other countries have over the US is that their players develop much better than ours during the years ours are in school. Other countries' players are professional at that point and 100% focused on the game 100% of the year. They are getting top level coaching and top level competition and far more hours of honing their skills.

Morris may have incredible drive and desire. But he has also chosen paths that don't push him quite as hard. I'm not saying he shouldn't have chosen these paths, but they do indicate his preferences.
