USMNT Talk

Jermaine Jones is still the best player we have. I don't know if we'd have ever gotten the ball back without him. Why can't he trade legs with Bradley? That's what a real captain would do.

Jones has his own problems, but as predicted, Bradley s form has fallen off a cliff since he came to MLS.

I shouldn't equate winning the ball with being our best player. I just didn't see too much of anyone else breaking up play.

It's just annoying when the two main fixtures of the team are the biggest reasons holding us back.

I'd say Bobby Wood was our best player by a mile. It's criminal to make him try to combine with Jozy

On Jones, he was doing a great job trying to get a red card
He's really good at toeing that line usually. It's like some Jedi mind trick he pulls pretty regularly. I think he believes so strongly that he telepathically influences the ref.

Also, have we discussed how Tim Howard looks done for the year, and he's hurting the NYC CCL chances? Sonuvabitch.

You know, I need to rewatch since I was in a bar, but I feel like we outplayed Mexico for large parts of the 2nd half.

Only caught a bit but Pulisic is our best dribbler in traffic. The kid just has guts & moxie to spare.... too bad it doesn't rub off on some of the rest.

And Wood was absolutely livid he didn't get the flick in the box on the 2v1. Easy goal if it'd been played. Instead a shot right at the keeper

he should have been. He could have walked it into the net.

As far as CP - well, yeah. He's probably the best 18 year old in the world and one of the best at that age ever.

Macmath is alright i think...he was doing ok before howard from what i remember.

and yes tale of two halves with second goal coming in when the US was doing better.....though the subs suggested klinsman wanted to play safe for some reason.

To my eye a huge part of our failure in the first half could have been avoided by starting Kljestan. The big takeaway from the recent round of friendlies and Hex qualifiers was that the Kljestan - Pulisic axis is strong and getting stronger. The several times in the first half that we were able to work the ball up to MEX's 18, we completely ran out of ideas or just couldn't see a lane to pass through / over the defense. We needed creativity and bravery, and the Kljestan - Pulisic teamup could have supplied that. Maybe.

Also, did anyone else feel that Klinsmann initially trotted out a 3-5-2 because it's the trendy thing to do right now? Conte has brought it back to the mainstream, and obviously TOR ripped us up with it. 3-5-2 seems poised to be the next 4-2-3-1 if teams can make themselves believe they have the squad for it.

Going into the game, I thought the 3-5-2 was a solid idea because it puts our backs farther up the pitch in a more natural position for them. Of course, I thought one of those backs would be Yedlin. I also thought they might have actually practiced it enough that the players knew what they were supposed to be doing.

Jones looked old and slow last game. I think Fabian Johnson and Pulisic if put in the correct positions are our two best players right now.

Yeah...I don't think Klinsmann ever gives any instructions. That's why Nagbe essentially told him to fuck off. And that's a shame. Bradley, while sucking horribly as a defender, could suffice if paired with Nagbe and Jones (so long he's around).

I'm going to say that Gonzalez starting is where we went wrong. If we were going to play that formation, we needed Orozco there.

Of course, Geoff Cameron is ideal for that role or dmid. I'm hoping if we stick with a 442/433, then he will take over as the 6. I can stomach Bradley running box to box to eat up space, but he can't have any actual responsibilities because he can't execute. That's how TFC gets the most out of him - let him just go out there with a dedicated DM in behind and some playmakers in front. Then, he only has to move the ball a little bit and doesn't have too much pressure. Also, when he fucks up, there's someone there behind him.
