USMNT Talk

Yay and boo!

Yay because good for him and good for the clubs reputation. Boo because this only expediates his path away from the club.

Will we even be able to keep him through this summer? If he retains the #1 into the World Cup, is there even a remote chance that he is still on our roster during the World Cup?

I think there’s a good chance that Poch and US Soccer are urging him to stay in NY where he has a solid position with guaranteed playing time. If all goes well he gets an even bigger payday after that.
There’s no guarantee he takes that advice even if they offer it, but I think it’s a possible path for him to stay with this club for another year.

huh. i kinda took this to mean he would remain the #1 during the gold cup not that he was now considered the #1 period.

kinda crazy for him to jump both steffan and schulte, who both play regularly, if he is the new #1 for the foreseeable future.

Yea the tweet I posted is ambiguous. First, you have a HRB writer stating something "per" a wash post writer, putting it in quotes and there's no clarity who if anyone the source is. Second there's no timing element indicating if this is through the Gold Cup, until others become available, or until and if he falters.
So you you could be right. Not at all clear.

I also assumed it meant for the Gold Cup. But obviously if he continues to do well, and then keeps playing regularly, no reason to think he isn’t in contention for the big show next year.

If Turner goes to Lyon and plays regularly that probably brings him right back into the mix as well.

My silver lining for this is looking at the matt turner situation where he went to Europe before the world cup, then don't play which hurt his world cup campaign, maybe freese will want to avoid that and be in a stable situation leading up to the WC

But if a European club offers up a crazy valuation for Freese, is NYCFC/CFG going to say no the deal?

poor mistake by freese. not the best situation to be in, but those are the kind of pressure situations that he needs to perform to be the #1 at the WC.

this is what happens with modern day keepers expected to play with their feet. boot that next time and there'd be no issue.

Yeah, that was rough. He has the rest of the tournament, playing against better teams, like Mexico and Costa Rica, to make that play a distant memory and solidify his place.

I saw 1-1 and the first thing I thought was "pls don't be a Freese mistake", and of course it was. Sad.
However the rest of the tournament so far he's been pretty decent, so I wonder what happened here. Nerves?

nerves definitely played a part. i think he intended to pass the ball out to tolkien but miskicked cause it's his weaker foot in a high pressure situation. i think if his thought was "i'm gonna get rid of this" it would have been ok. but his attempt to play an accurate pass created some room for mistakes. of course, turner has made many mistakes, so I don't think this will hurt freese that much.

Would have been nice if he followed up the give away with a save though. tough critics might say he didn't do well enough to cut off the angles, but personally, i think it was a solid finish and freese protected his near post as he should.

i saw lalas say freese should have come out and collected the ball when it dropped into the 18. but imo, i think that would have caused more chaos. the best option would have been to show for ream and boot that thing. of course, none of it would have happened at all if ream would have turned to the touch and played upfield instead of passing back to the freese with oncoming attackers.

FWIW I listened to the Futbol Americas pod and the consensus (including Kasey Keller) was that even setting aside last night’s error, Freese isn’t and never was a serious contender for the US #1.

since when do those guys know what they're talking about? they're all hot takes. haha

i don't think Freese is a contender for US #1 yet. But I think he can get there. I honestly don't know who the US #1 is. I don't think we have a stand out keeper that is head and shoulders above the rest at the moment.

Who's the USMNT #1 right now? Turner or Steffan? None of those guys play real minutes anymore. You need to play players who are playing.

It's true, the US has no #1 keeper. Totally a toss up between several guys right now. Some of whom are currently injured.

So different from earlier eras, when top-tier keepers were pretty much all we had.
